‘9-1-1: Nashville’ Season 2 Episode 1 Recap & Ending Explained Who Is Behind the Biblical Plagues?
Few procedurals can transform a lavish museum gala into a horror spectacle, but ‘9-1-1: Nashville’ has never shied away from the dramatic. The second season premiere, which aired on October 15 on ABC, plunges the 113 into a mystery that is both bizarre and unsettling. If you’re seeking a complete recap and an explanation of the ending, here’s how it all unfolded.
The first season concluded with a fierce confrontation between Blythe and Dixie, leaving tensions high. Don also came dangerously close to being unfaithful to his wife, choosing instead to return home, a decision that only intensified the strain in his marriage. A quiet return was the last thing anyone anticipated.
Instead, the premiere, titled “Going Rogue,” continues the investigation into attacks inspired by the plagues of Egypt. The episode features a swarm of murder hornets and a flood of blood, concluding without revealing the mastermind behind these events. This leaves the 113 facing a villain who has only just begun their reign of terror.
The 113 responds to a swarm of murder hornets that traps guests at a museum auction gala. Don assists in containing the insects, but newcomer Detective Rogue Kelly, portrayed by Ryan Phillippe, quickly asserts that this was no accident. Someone deliberately introduced the hornets and raised the temperature in a building that typically maintains a cool environment for art.
Rogue also observes that Don has been stung and recognizes the warning signs just before the captain collapses. His quick thinking saves Don’s life, although gratitude is scarce. Don remains dismissive of his health concerns, adding another layer to his stubborn nature.
Rogue, a former New York homicide detective, arrives in Nashville just as the crimes begin. He is confident, observant, and not particularly inclined to soften his remarks. This makes him valuable at a crime scene but less welcome at the dinner table.
Chris O’Donnell shared with TVLine that Rogue “came in a little aggressive, a little hot,” prompting Don to remind him of the house rules. During Sunday brunch, Rogue innocently inquires about the duration of Don and Blythe’s separation, exposing a secret they hoped to keep hidden. Don gets his revenge when Rogue starts choking, taking his time to assist.
Blythe’s therapist suggests a “bed divorce,” meaning they will sleep in separate beds while she contemplates their future. The couple remains under one roof, with no legal divorce announced. Their son Ryan is unaware of any issues, making the brunch revelation even more uncomfortable.
Meanwhile, Blythe and Dixie are mandated to attend anger management after their altercation. Their therapist concludes that both women are misdirecting their anger, as Don is the real source of their frustrations. A fellow attendee jokes that they act as if they want to be with each other, a line O’Donnell found amusing.

The second attack sends the 113 to a building where a woman named Judy is trapped in a laundry room filling with blood. Don and his sons work together to rescue her before she drowns, only for Don to realize that the blood is not human and has a gamey smell.
This leads Don and Rogue to a nearby butcher shop that produces blood sausages, where the blood was redirected. Another biblical clue ties the flood to the hornet attack, showcasing that Don’s practical experience complements Rogue’s investigative skills.
The premiere does not reveal the identity of the perpetrator. The evidence confirms that someone is intentionally staging disasters using biblical plagues as a blueprint. According to TVLine, the episode leaves eight more potential threats for the 113 to confront in the upcoming weeks.

Rogue also mentions that he has children in Los Angeles and Austin, the cities where ‘9-1-1’ and ‘9-1-1: Lone Star’ are set. This has fans speculating about a potential crossover. However, the premiere does not confirm this, and Phillippe has teasingly suggested there could be some fun ahead.
Other secrets remain hidden. Ryan and Sam have yet to reveal her pregnancy and cancer diagnosis, indicating that while Rogue is observant, he does not know everything. Critics have generally responded positively, praising Phillippe’s chemistry with O’Donnell, though some note that Rogue’s introduction may limit the focus on the broader ensemble.
The next episode, “Boys and Boils,” is set to air on Thursday, October 22, at 9 p.m. ET/PT on ABC, with next-day streaming available on Hulu. With a plague-obsessed criminal still on the loose, the 113 is racing against an unseen clock. Don and Rogue must also navigate their partnership without driving each other crazy.
