The hit show 1923 has dealt with the tragic loss of Cole Brings Plenty, who played Pete Plenty Clouds. He passed away at 27 in April 2024, and his death deeply affected the cast and crew. With the show returning for its second season, the first episode included a tribute to him.

Instead of writing off his character, the producers chose to recast the role. Jeremy Gauna now takes over as Pete, and Aminah Nieves, who portrays Teonna Rainwater, shared her thoughts on this decision in an interview.

Nieves spoke about how hard it could have been to carry on without addressing the loss. She explained that recasting Pete was the best choice, saying, “I could have easily gone into this with a lot of resentment and with a lot of hate and a lot of pain.”

However, she found peace in honoring Brings Plenty and lifting up Gauna, who took on the heavy task of replacing a beloved friend. “He did it with such grace,” Nieves added.

Brings Plenty’s passing has been a heartbreaking event. His death followed a reported domestic dispute, and though there were no signs of foul play, the exact cause remains unclear.

His family has called for more investigation into the situation, but official reports are sealed. Gauna, who was close friends with Brings Plenty, has stepped into the role with respect.

The show’s producers chose to keep Pete in the story, acknowledging how vital his character was to the plot. 1923 creator Taylor Sheridan had planned for season two to be the final one, so rewriting Pete’s story wouldn’t have done the character justice.

By recasting him, the show could continue with the established arc, honoring both the actor and his role.

Nieves believes that the show will continue to do justice to Brings Plenty’s legacy. “I know Jeremy did the best that he ever could, and it’s going to be great,” she said, reassuring fans that Pete’s story is in good hands.

The second season of 1923 airs on Sundays, and while the cast mourns, they also celebrate Brings Plenty’s work.
