Darren Aronofsky Reveals How ‘The Whale’ Led to Him Taking on ‘Caught Stealing’
Darren Aronofsky is a very special filmmaker. At times brilliant, at other times a controversial and divisive figure, Aronofsky has managed to build a reputation as a filmmaker who does not leave you bored.
Some of his films are considered masterpieces, like Requiem for a Dream, Black Swan, and The Whale, while others were heavily criticized, like Mother! or Noah. Now, Aronofsky is working on a new film, the crime drama Caught Stealing.
In an interview with the press, Aronofsky talked about his upcoming film and explained how The Whale actually pushed him to adapt Caught Stealing at this point in his career.
After a while, The Whale was finally another big hit for Aronofsky. The movie combined his signature style with an emotional story and some great acting performances. And while the film polarized some, it was generally regarded as a great movie and it won numerous accolades.
But, it seems that the success caught Aronofsky a bit off guard, as the director was in a crisis about his future after The Whale. “I was really upset that I couldn’t figure out what was next. And I kind of had this urge to do something fun,” he told the press.
This state motivated him to go back to some of his earlier, unproduced scripts and it was there that he found his current project. “I felt like there was just so much tension in our normal lives that I felt like the one thing that Hollywood has always done great is entertain. I looked at my projects and I said, ‘You know what? The most fun one I have is Charlie’s script,’” Aronofsky explained.
And while the movie will mark a turn in Aronofsky’s career, as he is a director known for his dark themes and style, while Caught Stealing is going to be a much lighter film, he is rumored to be taking on an adaptation of King’s Cujo story, so he’s going to go back to his roots very soon, as it stands.
