‘Thunderbolts*’ Producer Fuels Fan Theory With a Hint Straight Out of IMDb Trivia
When Geraldine Viswanathan was cast as “Mel” in Thunderbolts* to replace Ayo Edebiri, many fans thought she might secretly be playing Melissa Gold, also known as Songbird.
Over the course of the movie, Mel’s character is a young woman with internal struggles, trying to figure out what’s right and wrong. Instead of being a superhero with powers like Songbird, Mel is just a normal girl working for someone powerful and manipulative, questioning her morals.
She’s not flying with sound wings or using powers, but instead, she’s dealing with tough choices and helping move the plot forward. This doesn’t really sound like Songbird after all. But…
Marvel Studios executive producer Brian Chapek has hinted that the character Mel could become Songbird in the MCU. In a recent interview, Chapek said:
“There is a character that fans are trying to figure out is she or is she not — I would say what emblem does she wear that may or may not hint at this character’s larger identity.”
The emblem that Chapek is talking about is a gold songbird necklace that Mel is wearing:

The necklace Mel wears appears to be a clever wordplay on both her real name, Melissa Gold, and her superhero identity, Songbird.
In the comics, Melissa Gold has the power to create solid sound constructs and is a well-known member of the Thunderbolts team. If Mel does eventually become Songbird in the MCU, it would be an exciting development for both comic book fans and moviegoers.
While producer Brian Chapek’s recent comments don’t officially confirm anything, they certainly fuel speculation. Considering the growing importance of the Thunderbolts, also referred to as the New Avengers, in the MCU, it’s likely we’ll see more of them in future projects. The team is already confirmed to appear in Avengers: Doomsday, which is currently filming in the U.K.
