Tony Gilroy, the creator of Andor, has chosen to reinterpret the origin story of the droid K-2SO for the series, diverging from the narrative established in the 2017 Marvel comic Star Wars: Cassian & K-2SO Special #1.

In a conversation on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Gilroy expressed his perspective on the matter, stating, “Canon… I’m really sympathetic and into it… [but] I was annoyed to find out somebody had written an origin story for K-2SO… and it’s like, no I’m not paying attention to that.”

The original comic depicted Cassian Andor and a team of rebels reprogramming a KX-series Imperial droid, which would become K-2SO, during a mission. However, Gilroy opted for a different approach in the Andor series.

In Season 2, Episode 8, titled “Who Are You?”, Cassian encounters a KX droid amidst the chaos of the Ghorman massacre. After a fellow rebel disables the droid, Cassian retrieves its remains, setting the stage for K-2SO’s introduction into the series.

Initially, there were plans for a standalone, horror-themed episode dedicated to K-2SO’s origin. Written by Dan Gilroy, Tony’s brother, the episode was envisioned as a suspenseful narrative where a KX droid hunts rebels aboard a tanker ship.

Tony Gilroy described it as “an amazing episode that was like a horror movie.” However, due to budget constraints, this concept was shelved in favor of a more integrated introduction within the existing storyline.
