Darth Maul debuted in The Phantom Menace and he was introduced as an emerhing Sith threat in an era that was deemed peaceful at the time. Although a secondary antagonist in the grand(er) scheme, he became a fan favorite.

The character became so popular that Lucasfilm worked on his evolution and he has since appeared in numerous derivative works, both in live-action and animated format.

As you probably know, a new animated series – Maul – Shadow Lord – is currently in the works and Maul’s voice actor, Sam Witwer, recently revealed more information about the series and its approach.

Sam Witwer has provided the voice of Maul in several animated projects and he is now returning for the new one, which will explore a different side of the well-known Sith Lord.

Namely, after the Clone Wars, a disillusioned Maul will fight back against fate itself and will try to establish a criminal syndicate on a planet not under the Empire’s radar. At the same time, he is going to be training a new apprentice.

The show will explore a completely different side to Maul, a more human side, as Witwer confirmed, and while it won’t turn Maul into a hero, it will portray him as a much more layered character than we’ve seen:

As promised, Maul – Shadow Lord will dive deeper into Maul’s humanity, which is certainly going to be interesting. “It’s bad guys vs worse guys. This isn’t ‘Maul’s a teddy bear’—we’re not doing that. But is he as bad as Sidious or Vader? Actually, no. There’s humanity that seeps in… because of what’s happened to him,” Witwer comfirmed.

The show sounds great and we hope that we get more information about it soon! Until then, be sure to keep following us for all the updates!
