War Machine’s MCU Future Looks Grim, According to New Reports

‘Armor Wars’ is definitely one of the most “confusing” MCU projects. It has shifted between being a movie and a show and has faced long delays with little progress or updates.

It was originally envisioned as a film based on the comic storyline of the same name. It was intended to follow ‘Secret Invasion’ (which came out back in 2023) and ‘Ironheart’ (Set to be released next month). Back in 2011, Don Cheadle confirmed that a War Machine film was in the works and that Joe Robert Cole had been hired to write it.

Nine years later, during Disney’s 2020 Investor Day, it was announced that ‘Armor Wars’ would be developed as a television series for Disney+, with Don Cheadle set to reprise his role as James Rhodes. In 2021, Cheadle also mentioned that production would begin in a few months.

Then the show was transformed into a movie yet again, with an uncertain production or release date. In fact, the last update that Cheadle gave us was “I don’t know.”

Now, industry insider Alex Perez revealed via his May AMA what could be in store for the character.

A fan asked if War Machine’s story, including the Skrull plot, will be expanded after Secret Wars.

Perez said it’s unlikely. Rhodey hasn’t worn his armor in a long time and has PTSD about it, which Armor Wars was supposed to explore. But now it’s unclear what Marvel plans to do, and he’s not even confirmed to appear in Doomsday.

“At this point, probably not. I mean we’re about to head into Doomsday
with a Rhodey who hasn’t been in his armor in a really long time and
definitely has PTSD about getting into the armor again, which was
something that they were planning to explore in Armor Wars. Not sure what they plan to do now because I’m not even sure he’s in Doomsday.“

The last rumors we’ve heard regarding the project was that it’s going to be released after Secret Wars and that it’s being reworked due to extremely negative reception of Secret Invasion.
