‘Zootopia 2’ Reclaims Box Office Top Spot and Crosses $1 Billion Milestone
Disney’s animated sequel has officially cemented its status as a global phenomenon by reclaiming the domestic box office throne in its third weekend. The film’s resurgence pushed it past a major financial threshold, making it the second release of the year to achieve ten-figure earnings. This latest achievement propels the title past other major contenders to become the highest-grossing Hollywood production of the year.
Estimates from Comscore indicate the film generated approximately $26.3 million from North American theaters over the latest frame. This performance allowed the feature to overtake ‘Five Nights at Freddy’s 2’, which held the runner-up position with $19.5 million. The animated procedural has now amassed a domestic total of nearly $259 million.
International markets have fueled the bulk of the movie’s financial success, contributing over $877 million to the global tally. China remains a particularly lucrative territory, where the film has grossed more than $502 million alone. This foreign performance has been instrumental in driving the worldwide cumulative gross to $1.137 billion.
By crossing this milestone, the film has eclipsed the lifetime earnings of the original ‘Zootopia’, which concluded its run with $1.025 billion. It also surpassed the live-action ‘Lilo & Stitch’ adaptation to claim the title of the year’s biggest Hollywood export. Only the Chinese blockbuster ‘Ne Zha 2’ sits higher on the annual global chart with earnings approaching $2 billion.
The film’s staying power is attributed to strong word-of-mouth and a lack of direct family-friendly competition in the marketplace. While ‘Wicked: For Good’ continues to perform well in third place, the animated detective duo faces little threat until the release of ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’. That upcoming blockbuster is expected to reshape the box office landscape significantly upon its arrival.
Directors Jared Bush and Byron Howard have successfully expanded the franchise’s appeal beyond its 2016 predecessor. The sequel’s performance reaffirms the viability of theatrical animation following a period of fluctuating returns for the genre. With a total that continues to climb, the production stands as a critical financial pillar for Disney’s 2025 slate.
