Cult Classic Point Break to Return as TV Series on AMC
One of the most beloved action movies of the 1990s is officially heading to the small screen. AMC has secured the rights to develop a television series based on the hit film Point Break, following a highly competitive bidding war.
The original 1991 blockbuster was directed by Kathryn Bigelow and starred Keanu Reeves as Johnny Utah, a young FBI agent. Utah infiltrates a gang of bank-robbing surfers led by the charismatic Bodhi, famously played by the late Patrick Swayze.
This new series will not be a direct remake but rather a continuation of the story. Set 35 years after the events of the movie, the plot will focus on a new crew of dangerous thieves who have connections to the original Ex-Presidents gang.
David Kalstein has been tapped to write and executive produce the project. His previous credits include work on Amazon’s Butterfly, as well as network dramas like Quantico and NCIS: Los Angeles.
Producing alongside Kalstein are Andrew Kosove, Broderick Johnson, and Ben Roberts from Alcon Television Group. The project is being developed in collaboration with AMC Studios, which has been looking to capitalize on established intellectual property.
This isn’t the first time Hollywood has tried to revive the property. A film remake was released in 2015 starring Edgar Ramirez and Luke Bracey, but it failed to capture the magic or success of the original.
AMC is hoping to replicate the recent success it found with other adaptations of 90s classics. The network has received critical acclaim for its series version of Interview with the Vampire, which was recently renewed for a third season.
Let us know if you think a sequel series is a good idea or if the original should be left alone in the comments.
