When you think of Jennifer Lawrence, you likely picture her wielding a bow and arrow as Katniss Everdeen or painted blue as Mystique in the X-Men franchise. However, the Oscar-winning actress recently revealed that neither of those action-heavy blockbusters posed her greatest professional challenge. During a candid Q&A session at the 92NY Kaufmann Concert Hall in New York City, Lawrence identified the 2018 spy thriller Red Sparrow as the hardest project she has ever prepared for.

Speaking to a packed audience while promoting her latest film, Die, My Love, Lawrence opened up about the grueling process of becoming Dominika Egorova. In the film, she plays a Russian prima ballerina who suffers a career-ending injury and is subsequently manipulated into joining a brutal intelligence program. The role required a level of technical precision that Lawrence found uniquely difficult compared to her previous work.

“Technically speaking, Red Sparrow was the hardest because I had to learn a Russian accent,” Lawrence told the moderator. While she has tackled intense emotional roles in films like Silver Linings Playbook and Mother!, the linguistic demands of maintaining a convincing foreign accent for an entire feature film were a new hurdle. For an actress known for her naturalistic and often improvisational style, the rigid constraints of dialect work proved daunting.

The challenges extended far beyond just the dialogue. Because her character begins the story as a world-class dancer, Lawrence had to physically transform her body to look and move like a professional ballerina. This meant embarking on a punishing training regimen that lasted for months before cameras even started rolling.

Lawrence worked with associate choreographer Kurt Froman to achieve the necessary poise and strength. The training schedule was intense, requiring her to practice for three hours a day, six days a week. The goal wasn’t just to learn the steps, but to reshape her muscle memory and posture to reflect a lifetime of discipline at the Bolshoi.

Alongside the physical training, the role demanded a strict diet, something Lawrence had famously avoided in her earlier career. She admitted that this was the first time she had ever been “really hungry and disciplined” for a role. She felt that she couldn’t honestly inhabit the headspace of an ex-ballerina without physically feeling the deprivation and control that defines that world.

Beyond the technical and physical demands, Red Sparrow also pushed Lawrence into uncomfortable territory regarding on-screen nudity. The film explores the weaponization of sexuality, requiring her to perform scenes that were far more explicit than anything she had done previously. Lawrence confessed that the night before filming her first nude scene, she didn’t sleep at all due to anxiety.

She described the anticipation of standing naked in front of a classroom and a film crew as the stuff of nightmares. However, she credited director Francis Lawrence, with whom she had previously worked on the Hunger Games sequels, for creating a safe and professional environment. Ultimately, she found the experience empowering, noting that it helped her reclaim agency over her body following earlier invasions of her privacy.

The film, based on the novel by former CIA operative Jason Matthews, was a polarized release in 2018 but remains a significant entry in Lawrence’s filmography for its darkness and complexity. It stands as a testament to her willingness to step outside the comfort zone of lovable protagonists and embrace colder, more morally ambiguous characters.

Since her time as a Russian spy, Lawrence has continued to evolve her career with a mix of producing and acting. After taking a brief hiatus from the spotlight to focus on her personal life and marriage to art dealer Cooke Maroney, she returned with the satirical disaster comedy Don’t Look Up and the heartfelt indie drama Causeway.

Most recently, audiences saw her return to her comedic roots in the R-rated 2023 hit No Hard Feelings. In that film, she played a desperate woman hired to date a wealthy couple’s introverted son, a role that allowed her to showcase the physical comedy chops that made her a fan favorite during her early talk show appearances. The movie was a commercial success and reminded viewers of her versatility.

Looking ahead to the rest of 2026, Lawrence has a busy slate of projects that further distance her from the young adult franchises that made her a household name. She is currently on the promotional circuit for Die, My Love, a dark comedy-thriller directed by the acclaimed Lynne Ramsay. The film co-stars Robert Pattinson and promises to be another intense, character-driven showcase for Lawrence.

She is also attached to produce and star in The Wives, a murder mystery project in development with A24 and Apple Original Films. The concept is said to be inspired by the Real Housewives reality franchise, suggesting a blend of high drama and social satire. Additionally, there is buzz surrounding Why Don’t You Love Me, another A24 adaptation based on a graphic novel, which will see her exploring the complexities of a struggling marriage.

While rumors always swirl about a potential return to the world of Panem, especially with the upcoming Hunger Games prequel Sunrise on the Reaping slated for late 2026, Lawrence seems firmly focused on adult-oriented dramas and comedies. Her production company, Excellent Cadaver, is also ramping up its output, producing documentaries and narrative features that champion unique female voices.

Jennifer Lawrence’s journey from an indie darling in Winter’s Bone to the biggest movie star in the world and now to a selective producer-actor highlights a career defined by bold choices. Her reflection on Red Sparrow serves as a reminder that the most impressive performances often come from the roles that terrify actors the most. Whether she is mastering a Russian accent or diving into a dark comedy with Robert Pattinson, Lawrence continues to prove she is one of the most dynamic talents of her generation.

We would love to hear what you think about Jennifer Lawrence’s performance in Red Sparrow and which of her upcoming projects you are most excited to see, so please leave your thoughts in the comments.
