DreamWorks Animation Announces Sequel ‘The Wild Robot Escapes’
Fans of heartfelt animated adventures have plenty to look forward to with the upcoming sequel The Wild Robot Escapes now in development at DreamWorks Animation. This follow-up draws from the second book in Peter Brown’s beloved series and picks up where the original left off. The first film introduced Roz, a sophisticated robot voiced by Lupita Nyong’o who found herself stranded on a remote island filled with wildlife. She adapted to her surroundings, formed unexpected bonds, and raised an orphaned gosling named Brightbill while navigating challenges from nature and technology. That story resonated deeply with audiences and critics alike.
The original movie earned over $320 million at the global box office and received widespread praise for its stunning painterly animation and touching exploration of family and belonging. It garnered three Academy Award nominations, including one for best animated feature, along with numerous other honors such as the Critics’ Choice Award for best animated feature and several Annie Awards. Chris Sanders wrote and directed the first installment, marking his impactful return to feature animation after years away. Producer Jeff Hermann also played a key role in bringing that vision to life.
For the sequel, Sanders steps back from directing but returns to pen the screenplay, ensuring the story stays true to its emotional roots. Troy Quane, known for co-directing the Oscar-nominated ‘Nimona’, takes the helm as director. He brings experience from various studios, including work on projects at Disney, Sony Pictures Animation, and Blue Sky Studios before ‘Nimona’ found success on Netflix. Heidi Jo Gilbert, who served as head of story on the original film, joins as co-director. Her background includes key roles on films like ‘Puss in Boots: The Last Wish’ and other DreamWorks titles, making her a strong creative force for this project.
In the sequel’s plot, Roz and her adopted son Brightbill face a new chapter after the events of the first story. Roz ends up at a large dairy farm where she is reprogrammed for labor tasks during the day. At night she secretly works to reunite with Brightbill, who now migrates with a flock of wild geese. Their shared goal becomes escaping the farm’s confines and dangers to return to the island they call home. This journey promises to deepen themes of maternal love, freedom, and the clash between technology and the natural world, building on what made the original so moving.
No official release date has been announced yet for The Wild Robot Escapes, leaving anticipation to build as production moves forward. The creative team appears well-positioned to capture the same magic that made the first film a standout. With Sanders’ writing guiding the narrative and fresh directorial perspectives from Quane and Gilbert, the sequel holds strong potential to deliver another emotionally rich experience.
