Film studios frequently produce biopics to delve into the journeys of real-life figures, particularly in creative fields like cooking, writing, or music. These films typically highlight early challenges, pivotal moments, and the experiences that shape an individual’s future career.

A recent trend in cinema is to showcase renowned personalities before they achieved fame. Rather than focusing solely on their peak success, these narratives often emphasize their formative years and the mistakes or obstacles that helped mold them.

A24 has unveiled a new trailer for its forthcoming film ‘Tony’. This biographical drama centers on chef Anthony Bourdain, with Dominic Sessa taking on the lead role. The film is slated for theatrical release in August.

Directed by Matt Johnson, known for films like ‘BlackBerry’, the story follows a young Bourdain at 19, as he leaves college behind and finds himself in Provincetown, Massachusetts, where he begins working in a bustling restaurant kitchen.

In the trailer, Bourdain is seen discussing his aspirations. He states, “Okay, so I’m just going to walk you through the basic vision. It’s a coming-of-age story.” This scene captures his uncertainty about his future.

Later, he encounters a former classmate portrayed by Emilia Jones, who probes into his past, asking, “Didn’t you punch a hole in the principal’s door?” Bourdain replies that he has changed, expressing his belief that he is on the path to a writing fellowship, although that plan ultimately falls through.

After facing a difficult period, he travels to Provincetown, where he begins working under a strict chef played by Antonio Banderas. The chef lays down firm rules in the kitchen, stating, “We open Wednesday to Sunday. Start 11:00 a.m. That means you are here at 10:45. 11:00 is late. Anyone late is fired.”

As the narrative unfolds, Bourdain grapples with adjusting to kitchen life. He has conflicts with coworkers and learns just how intense the culinary environment can be. At one point, he reminisces about food from his childhood, saying, “I ate these in France when I was a kid. I said they taste like the future.”

Gradually, he starts to find his footing in the kitchen and takes on more responsibilities. He begins to share his ideas and discovers how to channel his creativity through food. One notable line from the trailer reflects this transformation: “[What] we’re going to start with is a special. Every Friday, something fancy, not pretentious. Something sexy, makes you want to f**k. Something only you can do.”

The trailer concludes with Bourdain embracing his new direction, stating, “If anybody asks, I’m not a writer. I work in a kitchen.” This moment signifies his full immersion into the world that will eventually define his career.

In addition to Sessa and Banderas, the film features Dagmara Dominczyk, Rich Sommer, Stavros Halkias, and Leo Woodall. The screenplay was crafted by Matt Johnson, Matthew Miller, Todd Bartels, and Lou Howe.

Based on the trailer, ‘Tony’ explores the early, chaotic, and uncertain phase of Anthony Bourdain’s life before he became a prominent figure in the culinary world.
