‘The One Piece’ Trailer Released as WIT Studio’s Netflix Remake Approaches
Few franchises hold the cultural significance that Eiichiro Oda’s pirate epic does. The ‘One Piece’ manga has sold over 600 million copies worldwide as of March 2026, and its animated adaptation has been airing for more than 20 seasons since its debut in 1999. For fans who grew up watching Monkey D. Luffy stretch his rubber arms toward an impossible dream, this tale of pirates, devil fruits, and found family remains one of the most emotionally impactful stories in modern entertainment.
When Netflix and WIT Studio announced their anime remake at Jump Festa 2024, excitement surged, but the silence that followed tested fans’ patience. Nearly three years passed with little more than concept art, leaving fans eager for any glimpse of animated footage from the new version. The anticipation only intensified with each passing month, making every update feel like a significant event.
That long wait ended on June 24, when the first official trailer for ‘The One Piece’ was unveiled during Netflix’s showcase at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival 2026. The announcement sent ripples across social media, with DiscussingFilm among those highlighting the reveal to an audience eager for news. The remake is set to debut globally on Netflix in February 2027, although a specific premiere date has yet to be confirmed.
Season 1 will consist of seven episodes, totaling approximately 300 minutes, adapting the first 50 chapters of Oda’s manga and concluding around Luffy’s first encounter with Sanji at the floating restaurant known as the Baratie. For reference, the original Toei Animation series required about 20 episodes and double that runtime to cover the same material. All seven episodes will be released simultaneously, allowing viewers to experience the entire East Blue Saga in one extended sitting.
WIT Studio, known for ‘Spy x Family’ and the early seasons of ‘Attack on Titan,’ is responsible for the animation of this project, aiming to make the story more accessible to younger audiences through modern visual techniques. The series is directed by Masashi Koizuka, who shared a message with fans via CBR’s coverage of the Annecy panel, expressing his hope that “children all over the world could relive that same thrill I felt back then,” reflecting the team’s deep investment in getting this right.
Original Japanese voice actress Mayumi Tanaka is set to reprise her iconic role as Monkey D. Luffy, ensuring continuity in the new version of the series. Series creator Eiichiro Oda has also encouraged the production team to introduce something genuinely new. As Screen Rant reported, Oda urged the staff to “express rather than copy and paste the work,” emphasizing his desire for the remake to stand as its own creative statement rather than a frame-for-frame recreation of the manga.
With a trailer that garnered over 1.2 million views on its release day, the demand for ‘The One Piece’ is undeniable. Does this first look from WIT Studio convince you that this is the version of Luffy’s journey worth the wait, or do you believe the East Blue Saga still belongs to the original?
