‘Fortnite’ Teams Up with Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ for Epic Crossover
Summer blockbusters and battle royale games have been intersecting for years, and this week’s release calendar highlights why studios target this specific audience. ‘Fortnite’ has crafted its identity around incorporating whatever pop culture moment is trending, whether that involves letting players explore as Bugs Bunny or watching a historic speech mid-match.
This latest collaboration pairs ‘Fortnite’ with what is being touted as the biggest blockbuster of the year, centering on Matt Damon’s portrayal of Odysseus. The film in question is Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey,’ an adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek epic that follows Odysseus on his long and perilous journey home after the Trojan War as he strives to reunite with his wife, Penelope.
The news comes from a clip shared by DiscussingFilm, showcasing a shadowy figure crouched in a small boat on dark waters, mirroring the in-game recreation of the film’s world. The collaboration was officially announced by Epic Games on July 14, accompanied by a brief 12-second trailer previewing Damon’s Odysseus as a playable in-game avatar. The announcement itself was understated, with social captions simply stating that each game is an epic journey of its own.
Fans reacting online have embraced the oddity of the pairing, and it’s easy to see why. Transforming Odysseus into an armed avatar raises significant questions about how a battle royale shooter aligns with the themes of trauma and homecoming that define the source material. Nevertheless, this isn’t the first time one of Nolan’s projects has appeared in ‘Fortnite,’ as ‘Tenet’ premiered its trailer in the game back in 2020, and both ‘Inception’ and ‘Batman Begins’ previously featured in-game screenings.
The ‘Fortnite’ tie-in isn’t the only game showcasing ‘The Odyssey’ name right now. A separate official title called ‘The Odyssey: Defy the Gods’ has launched on Roblox, described as the official companion to Nolan’s film and designed as a survival sailing adventure where players gather a crew, ration supplies, and appease the gods for safe passage. This version emphasizes scavenging for food and resources, weathering storms and whirlpools, and solving island puzzles with friends, promising a new ocean with every voyage.
All this crossover activity is occurring just as the film itself approaches release. Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ premiered on July 6, 2026, at the Empire Leicester Square in London, ahead of its theatrical rollout from Universal Pictures on July 17 in the United States and United Kingdom. The film carries an estimated budget of $250 million, making it one of the most expensive productions of Nolan’s career, and it is also the first of his films shot entirely on IMAX’s 70mm cameras. Alongside Damon, Odysseus confronts the Cyclops Polyphemus, the Sirens, the witch goddess Circe, and the nymph Calypso, while Penelope fends off suitors back home in Ithaca.
With the ‘Fortnite’ crossover, the Roblox tie-in, and the film’s own IMAX rollout, Nolan and Universal are clearly aiming to reach audiences wherever they already spend their time. Does transforming Odysseus into a ‘Fortnite’ skin serve as a fitting tribute to Homer, or does the battle royale treatment overlook the tragic essence of his journey home?
