Who Is the Mole in ‘Lioness’ Season 3? Theories, Twists, and Suspects Explored
‘Lioness‘ has centered its entire third season around a pressing question: who within the system betrayed Joe McNamara? Taylor Sheridan’s Paramount+ espionage drama unfolds across two timelines, depicting both the aftermath of Joe’s abduction and the mission that seemingly initiated the chaos months earlier.
This narrative structure kept viewers on their toes, speculating for weeks about who was truly orchestrating the attacks on Joe’s team and, ultimately, her family. As new information emerged, fan theories evolved with each episode, shifting the focus on various suspects in the season’s central conspiracy.
The mystery took a significant turn when it was revealed that Russia was not behind Joe’s kidnapping. Instead, the sixth episode introduced a mysterious operative named Babat, working for Iran as retaliation for a mission Joe led in the second season. This revelation turned previous assumptions about the real threat upside down.
However, this twist did not resolve the mole question, as someone within the agency must still be leaking information to those pursuing Joe. The penultimate episode strongly suggested that Ukrainian FISU agent Oleksandra Balakin could be the mole, echoing Joe’s earlier reference to Occam’s razor, which posits that the simplest explanation is often the correct one.
Despite this, not everyone is convinced that Oleksandra is the sole culprit. Ready Steady Cut has presented a detailed case for a different suspect, arguing that Nicole Kidman’s Kaitlyn Meade fits the role thematically, even if the evidence against her is less substantial.
The argument hinges on Kaitlyn’s unique position within the CIA, which grants her the access needed to influence major decisions from behind the scenes. The season has also emphasized the personal stakes for Joe, with her family drawn into the danger, making a betrayal from someone as close as Kaitlyn more impactful than one from a compromised foreign asset like Oleksandra.

Specific plot points also support this theory, such as Kaitlyn’s swift action to eliminate Oleksandra after her husband Errol’s think tank analysis suggested a mole within U.S. intelligence, and her deliberate absence from the office during the mission to rescue Joe. There’s even a counter-theory suggesting that Kaitlyn and Joe may have orchestrated an unauthorized operation together, using Joe as bait to expose the real culprit, allowing both Oleksandra and a deeper conspiracy to remain in play.

In addition to Kaitlyn and Oleksandra, other candidates have emerged in online discussions, including QRF team member Cody Spears, whose history with Joe and reactions throughout the season have drawn viewer scrutiny. While these theories may not carry the same weight as the Oleksandra reveal or the case against Kaitlyn, they highlight how thoroughly ‘Lioness’ has scattered red herrings in its final episodes.
With only the season finale remaining to unveil the mystery, the show has ample opportunity to deliver one last twist before the credits roll. Whether the true answer is the simplest one or something much closer to home, ‘Lioness’ has ensured that viewers remain uncertain.
