‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Nears Record as Biggest Domestic Movie of All Time
‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ has maintained its status as the highest-grossing domestic release for over a decade, a record that has withstood numerous Marvel hits, animated blockbusters, and franchise revivals without facing serious competition. This impressive longevity made the record seem almost unbreakable.
However, ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘ has been quietly challenging that notion throughout its theatrical run. The film debuted with a staggering $360 million domestic weekend, quickly surpassed $2 billion globally, and dominated the North American box office for six consecutive weekends before finally dropping to second place behind a new release.
Despite this slip, the chase for the record continued, adding some late-game excitement. The film earned a robust $8.4 million during its seventh three-day weekend, marking a 53.9% decline from the previous holiday-boosted weekend, even after losing 217 theaters. This performance is notably strong compared to other major releases at a similar stage, with ‘Avengers: Endgame’ experiencing a 39.4% drop while grossing $4.9 million and ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ falling 54.7% with $7 million during their respective frames.

This weekend’s earnings brought ‘Brand New Day’s’ domestic total to $935.2 million, leaving it just $1.4 million shy of ‘The Force Awakens’s’ all-time record of $936.6 million. Remarkably, the film is now $111 million ahead of where ‘Endgame’ was at the same point in its run, despite having started just $3 million ahead of the 2019 Marvel blockbuster.
With the weekend gross falling just short of the milestone, industry experts anticipate that the record-breaking moment will occur early in the week, likely by Tuesday at the latest, based on the film’s current daily performance. Once it crosses that final hurdle, ‘Brand New Day’ will become the first film to dethrone ‘The Force Awakens’ as the biggest domestic release in box office history, a record that has seemed nearly unreachable for years.

Analysts are now projecting a final domestic total for ‘Brand New Day’ to be around $960 million, which would provide a solid margin above ‘The Force Awakens’s’ record once its theatrical run concludes. The film has also maintained an A CinemaScore rating from audiences since opening weekend, reflecting the strong word-of-mouth that has kept ticket sales robust well beyond the typical decline seen in most blockbusters.
This combination of critical acclaim, audience excitement, and consistent weekly performance has made ‘Brand New Day’s’ pursuit of the domestic record feel less like a long shot and more like an inevitable outcome in recent weeks. Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and featuring Tom Holland in his fourth solo performance as the character, the film has successfully followed up on a franchise entry that many believed would be nearly impossible to surpass, given the expansive scale of 2021’s ‘No Way Home.’

Whether the record falls this weekend or waits until early next week, the outcome now seems less about if it will happen and more about when it will occur. For a film already ranked among the highest-grossing releases in history worldwide, finishing its domestic run at the top of the all-time chart would be a fitting conclusion to an already remarkable theatrical journey.
