Awards season has a unique way of turning familiar faces into record-setting icons, and this year’s Emmy cycle is no exception. With a competitive comedy category and a limited series race that evolved week by week, predicting the winners felt like a genuine toss-up in several categories on Monday night.

Matthew Rhys entered the ceremony with two nominations, a notable achievement in itself. The Welsh actor made history back in July by securing nominations for both ‘The Beast in Me’ and ‘Widow’s Bay’ in the same season, becoming one of only two men nominated across all three major lead acting categories.

However, what transpired when the envelopes were opened pushed the boundaries of Emmy history. Rhys won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series for his haunting performance in Netflix’s ‘The Beast in Me,’ and later returned to the stage to accept Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for ‘Widow’s Bay.’ No actor in the show’s history had ever won two leading acting Emmys in a single ceremony.

This double victory is even more significant when paired with his 2018 win for ‘The Americans,’ giving Rhys a complete set of lead acting Emmys across drama, comedy, and limited series. This trifecta has never been achieved by a male performer, placing him alongside Barbara Stanwyck as the only actors of any gender to accomplish it, although her wins spanned from 1961 to 1983, predating the current separation between comedy and drama categories.

Before Rhys, only two performers had ever achieved two acting wins in a single Emmy night, and neither did so in the lead categories. James Earl Jones won lead drama actor and supporting actor in a limited series in 1991, while Stockard Channing took home two supporting actress awards in 2002. Several actors, including Robert Young, Carroll O’Connor, and Andre Braugher, came close to the trifecta by winning two of the three lead categories, but none completed the set.

Among the actresses still pursuing this milestone is Claire Danes, Rhys’s co-star in ‘The Beast in Me.’ The Netflix limited series features Rhys as a mysterious neighbor with a hidden past, opposite Danes as a novelist grappling with grief and writer’s block, making his comedic role in ‘Widow’s Bay’ feel like a completely different character.

This contrast contributed to the uniqueness of the evening. In ‘Widow’s Bay,’ Rhys portrays Mayor Tom Loftis, a small-town leader striving to maintain order in a cursed island community as horror looms nearby. Discussing the delicate balance of tones in the show, Rhys credited director Hiro Murai for finding the equilibrium the cast needed. “I think it was a fragile tone to get and one that worried all of us,” he told Yahoo in the press room, acknowledging Murai’s steady guidance in keeping the series from tipping too far into either comedy or horror.

‘Widow’s Bay’ itself had a remarkable night beyond Rhys’s individual win, further solidifying the sense that this ceremony belonged to both the Apple TV series and its leading man. With the horror-comedy’s overall success and Rhys rewriting the record books, Monday’s telecast will likely be remembered as one of the most historic nights in recent Emmy history.

With ‘Widow’s Bay’ already renewed for a second season and Rhys’s newly completed trifecta now part of Emmy lore, the focus shifts to whether anyone can replicate this achievement soon. For now, the record stands alone, as does he.
