Simu Liu Shares Update on ‘Shang-Chi 2’ Release Date for Fans
Marvel sequels often test the patience of fans, especially when a beloved standalone film is overshadowed by the studio’s ever-evolving schedule. Few characters exemplify this better than Shang-Chi, whose eagerly awaited follow-up has been delayed for years.
The actor portraying Shang-Chi, Simu Liu, has been fielding the same question from fans seeking updates. With the character making a return to the MCU after a long absence, those inquiries have become even more pressing.
In a recent fan interaction shared by itzyreviews, Liu addressed the status of ‘Shang-Chi 2’ and revealed that he, too, lacks a definitive timeline. Instead of providing a release date, Liu indicated that the sequel remains behind two major upcoming Avengers films on Marvel’s release calendar, confirming that ‘Doomsday’ and ‘Secret Wars’ will be released before ‘Shang-Chi 2’ can take its turn.
The anticipation for ‘Shang-Chi 2’ has been lengthy. Development for a follow-up to 2021’s ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’ was first reported in December of that year, with original director Destin Daniel Cretton set to return for both writing and directing roles.
However, the project has faced numerous delays due to changes in Marvel’s production schedule. Cretton’s focus shifted when he took on directing ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ which premiered in theaters this past July, further pushing ‘Shang-Chi 2’ down the priority list, even though Cretton confirmed in a July interview with ScreenRant that the film remains in active development.
Meanwhile, Liu has kept busy within the franchise. He is set to reprise his role as Shang-Chi in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ later this year, showcasing a brand new costume for the character, and has confirmed his appearance in ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ the following year, extending his MCU commitments even further before ‘Shang-Chi’ can realistically move ahead.

Despite the sequel’s uncertain status, Liu has expressed excitement about returning to the broader Marvel universe. He described his experience on ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ as a “dream come true,” sharing with ScreenRant that working alongside actors he admired growing up felt like standing among his peers for the first time.
Liu elaborated further, calling the ensemble film a love letter to the superhero genre, crafted for fans who grew up feeling like outsiders and found solace in comic books. This enthusiasm has been evident in his recent press appearances, even as questions about ‘Shang-Chi 2’ continue to circle back to the same unresolved timeline.
With ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ set for release in December and ‘Secret Wars’ following about a year later, Liu’s latest comments suggest that ‘Shang-Chi 2’ may not begin progressing until after 2027 at the earliest. For a character whose solo debut redefined what an MCU origin story could entail, that leaves a long wait ahead for fans eager for a proper sequel.
