Mike Flanagan’s ‘Carrie’ Reveals Episode Titles with a High School Twist
Stephen King adaptations have become a hallmark for one particular filmmaker, whose success with the author’s works has turned nearly every new project into a highly anticipated event. This reputation has only intensified as we approach fall, with his latest venture bringing one of King’s most iconic stories to television for the first time.
Mike Flanagan’s adaptation of ‘Carrie’ has been generating excitement for months, especially since Amazon greenlit the eight-episode series in April of last year. As the release date in October draws near, fresh details about the show have begun to emerge, each adding depth to Flanagan’s vision for reinventing King’s 1974 debut novel.
The newest revelation focuses on the episode titles, which cleverly reflect the series’ high school backdrop. Instead of conventional episode names, each installment is presented as a class period on Carrie White’s schedule at Ewen High School, including First Period, Foreign Language, Social Studies, Dramatic Arts, Physical Education, Home Economics, Romantic Literature, and AP Physics.

‘Carrie’ marks the first television adaptation of King’s groundbreaking novel, following several film versions dating back to the Oscar-nominated 1976 original, along with a 1999 sequel, a 2002 TV movie, and a 2013 remake. Flanagan serves as showrunner, writer, and director for the new series, with King himself on board as an executive producer.
Summer H. Howell stars as Carrie White, a role chosen from over a thousand auditions. The series follows Carrie as she navigates high school life after her father’s death, a bullying scandal that divides her community, and the emergence of her mysterious telekinetic powers that begin to alter her reality.
The cast surrounding Howell features Samantha Sloyan as Margaret White, Siena Agudong as Sue Snell, Alison Thornton as Chris Hargensen, Joel Oulette as Tommy Ross, and Matthew Lillard as Principal Grayle, reuniting with Flanagan after their collaboration on the King adaptation ‘The Life of Chuck.’ Additional cast members include Josie Totah, Arthur Conti, Amber Midthunder, Kate Siegel, Rahul Kohli, and Heather Graham.

While Flanagan writes and directs four of the eight episodes, the remaining episodes feature a rotating group of directors, including Kate Siegel, Axelle Carolyn, Kyra Sedgwick, and Hiromi Kamata. This approach mirrors the anthology-style directing Flanagan has employed in previous projects, allowing for a varied visual style while maintaining his influence on the story’s beginning and end.
Filming for the series took place in Vancouver from June to October of last year, with Prime Video promising a version of ‘Carrie’ that expands upon King’s original narrative and adds depth to its characters. All eight episodes will be released simultaneously on October 7, available in over 240 countries and territories worldwide.
With the episode titles providing a glimpse into how Flanagan intends to depict Carrie’s journey through her final year of high school, excitement for the series continues to grow as the release date approaches.
