Horror thrives on transforming familiar comforts into sources of fear, and few things are as universally comforting as a parent’s presence at home. This instinct is precisely what one of this fall’s most unsettling new releases aims to exploit.

Blumhouse and Atomic Monster have established a reputation for finding innovative angles on domestic horror, and their latest collaboration dives right into that territory. With Halloween approaching, the studio’s newest offering is gearing up to be one of the genre’s most discussed surprises this October.

The new trailer for ‘Other Mommy’ has already begun to unsettle horror fans, centering on a chilling twist: Jessica Chastain portrays both a loving mother and a sinister entity impersonating her. The film follows Bela, an eight-year-old girl in a household strained by marital tension, as she confronts a mysterious presence emerging from her bedroom closet that looks just like her mother.

Chastain takes on dual roles as Ursula, Bela’s mother, and the entity known only as “Other Mommy,” a supernatural double whose growing influence gradually pulls the entire family into a deepening nightmare. The trailer hints at the entity’s unsettling dialogue, with the character asking Bela, “Can I go inside your heart?” as the line between the real mother and her double blurs.

‘Other Mommy’ is based on Josh Malerman’s novel ‘Incidents Around the House,’ adapted for the screen by Nathan Elston, who has previously worked on ‘Succession.’ Directed by Rob Savage, known for ‘Host,’ ‘Dashcam,’ and ‘The Boogeyman,’ this project continues his trend of crafting genre films that build slow, creeping dread rather than relying solely on jump scares.

The film marks Chastain’s return to horror after a decade-long string of genre roles, including ‘Take Shelter,’ ‘Mama,’ ‘Crimson Peak,’ and ‘It: Chapter Two.’ The cast also features Arabella Olivia Clark as Bela, Jay Duplass as her father Russ, along with Dichen Lachman, Arian Moayed, and Karen Allen as Bela’s grandmother.

Originally set to premiere in May, ‘Other Mommy’ has been rescheduled for an October 9 release, placing it right in the heart of the Halloween moviegoing season. This timing positions it alongside ‘The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender’ on the same weekend, providing audiences with a clear horror alternative amid the broader October lineup.

The trailer has been generating buzz even before its wider online release, having been shown exclusively in theaters ahead of screenings for Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ earlier this year. This placement indicates Universal’s confidence in the film’s ability to disturb audiences on the big screen before its broader release.

With James Wan producing through Atomic Monster and Blumhouse’s genre expertise backing the project, ‘Other Mommy’ is poised to become one of the fall’s most genuinely unsettling horror releases, built around a premise that transforms the comforting presence of a mother into a source of terror.
