HBO’s ‘Harry Potter’ Casts Rafe Spall as Arthur Weasley for Season 2
Casting a beloved ensemble as large as the Weasley family comes with significant pressure, especially when the source material has been cherished by readers for decades. HBO’s ongoing ‘Harry Potter‘ series has spent much of the past year gradually filling out that family, one role at a time.
The production had already secured most of the Weasley clan well before filming began on Season 1, with Katherine Parkinson cast as matriarch Molly Weasley and Alastair Stout as her son Ron, Harry’s future best friend. The family continued to grow, with Tristan Harland and Gabriel Harland taking on the twin roles of Fred and George, and Ruari Spooner completing the group as Percy.
Now, one significant gap in the family tree has been filled. Rafe Spall has been cast as Arthur Weasley, the quirky, Muggle-obsessed patriarch, for Season 2 of HBO’s ‘Harry Potter,’ according to THR. This casting closes out one of the more eagerly awaited roles in the show’s ensemble, especially considering Arthur’s importance as the series progresses through Rowling’s books.
Spall’s casting comes alongside several other additions for Season 2. Billy Barratt has been cast as a young Tom Riddle, which settles earlier fan theories about who would take on that role, while Lenny Rush will portray the beloved house-elf Dobby. Additionally, Bonnie Hill has stepped into the role of Ginny Weasley, replacing original Season 1 actress Gracie Cochrane, who left the project after the first season.
These new cast members join an already impressive main cast that includes Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid. The show is designed to adapt each of Rowling’s seven novels into its own dedicated season, with Rowling herself serving as an executive producer on the project.

Production on Season 2 seems to be progressing swiftly. Several cast members reportedly returned to set as early as August, ahead of the fall production start that had initially been suggested following the show’s Season 2 renewal in May.
This urgency aligns with comments from HBO chief Casey Bloys, who mentioned to The Times of London that the network’s writers were already crafting Season 2 scripts, aiming to prevent a significant gap between installments due to the rapid growth of the young cast. Bloys emphasized that while the show won’t follow a strict annual schedule given its scale, the network is clearly striving to operate as efficiently as possible while the core cast remains age-appropriate for their roles.
With Season 1’s adaptation of ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’ set to premiere on HBO Max this Christmas Day, Spall’s casting as Arthur Weasley adds one more confirmed piece to the puzzle as the show builds toward its next chapter.
