Spin-offs often face challenges in television, struggling to prove their worth beyond leveraging a popular side character from a successful show. The key has always been to create a narrative that stands on its own while respecting the elements that made the original series appealing.

This challenge is at the forefront of Prime Video’s new ‘Reacher’ spin-off, which centers around a character beloved by fans. Frances Neagley, who has captivated audiences as Jack Reacher’s sharp and pragmatic former Army colleague, has generated excitement since the announcement of her solo series.

With the first reviews of ‘Neagley’ now available, early reactions indicate that the spin-off has largely met expectations. Maria Sten returns as the title character, leading an original eight-episode mystery-thriller that does not adapt any specific Lee Child novel, allowing the series to craft its own unique story within the established ‘Reacher’ universe.

The series follows Neagley, a former U.S. Army Master Sergeant who served in the elite 110th Special Investigations Unit alongside Reacher. After transitioning to a career as a private investigator and corporate security consultant in Chicago, she finds herself drawn into a dangerous conspiracy when a close childhood friend dies under suspicious circumstances that the police dismiss as an accident.

Buzz surrounding ‘Neagley’ intensified following the release of the trailer, with fans taking to social media to express their excitement about seeing the character take center stage. Many viewers have highlighted Neagley’s morally complex nature, suggesting that the show may delve into darker themes than its parent series typically explores.

One of the compelling aspects of Neagley’s character throughout her appearances in ‘Reacher’ is her haphephobia, an intense aversion to physical touch that has influenced her relationships, making them largely platonic. This trait carries over into the spin-off, adding a unique personal dimension to her investigative work that distinguishes her from Reacher’s more physical approach to problem-solving.

Critics with early access have generally agreed that ‘Neagley’ succeeds by embracing what works rather than attempting to reinvent the wheel. Collider’s review characterized the series as a “‘Reacher’-lite” spin-off that is “officially worth your time,” commending the strong ensemble cast while noting that the show occasionally struggles to establish a distinct identity separate from its predecessor. Nevertheless, the review acknowledged ‘Neagley’ for delivering a genuinely engaging and intimate mystery that should please long-time fans of the franchise.

All eight episodes were released simultaneously on September 16, coinciding with the finale of ‘Reacher’ Season 4, allowing fans to dedicate a full day to both narratives. Alan Ritchson makes a guest appearance as Reacher, helping to connect the two series without overshadowing Sten’s performance as the lead.

With early reactions trending positively and fans eager to see more of Neagley’s journey, Prime Video appears to have successfully created a spin-off that stands on its own while still feeling like a true extension of the franchise it originates from.
