‘Slow Horses’ Season 6 Episode 1 Recap and Ending Explained: Is Frank Harkness Back?
Few spy dramas manage to blend humor and bleakness as effectively as ‘Slow Horses’. The series has established its identity on this delicate balance, showcasing Jackson Lamb and his team of disgraced MI5 agents who, despite their incompetence, often find themselves inadvertently saving the day, all while enduring a barrage of insults.
The sixth season debuted on Apple TV on September 16, with the opening episode titled “Circle of Life.” It quickly reminds viewers of the precarious situation at Slough House, as the team grapples with the aftermath of last season’s power shift at Regent’s Park, leading to an even more chaotic environment.
The episode kicks off with Struan Loy, a former Slow Horse so inept he was deemed unfit even for Slough House, now attempting to teach karate from a converted shipping container while dreaming of creating stackable tiny homes. However, his entrepreneurial aspirations are abruptly halted when two impostors posing as investors break his arm, imprison him, and set the container ablaze, igniting what appears to be a season-long conspiracy targeting both current and former Slow Horses.
These same individuals later confront Kay White before shifting their focus to River Cartwright, infusing the premiere with a palpable sense of dread. Jackson Lamb learns of the looming threat when Emma Flyte informs him, defying Diana Taverner’s explicit orders. It doesn’t take long for Jackson and River to deduce that Struan’s demise was no mere accident.
The situation worsens as Slough House has been completely erased from the Park’s official records, meaning the team is left without pay. Lady Di, now in charge as First Desk, even sends an estate agent to evaluate the building’s worth, an intrusion that earns him a keyboard to the face from JK Coe.
Catherine Standish seeks answers from Moira at the Park and discovers that the deletion was intentional, seemingly ordered from the top. When Jackson confronts Diana, she feigns ignorance but quickly fabricates an excuse rather than admit she might not be in control of her department.

The loss of control becomes evident through her interactions with Peter Judd, who has been shadowing wealthy donors and pressuring Diana to cooperate. The larger issue arises when it’s revealed that the funding for her position did not originate from Judd but from an anonymous third party, suggesting that the Service may be deeply compromised.
At the heart of the premiere is the off-screen death of River’s grandfather, David Cartwright, and the hastily arranged Service funeral. This event serves as the emotional and narrative focal point, drawing together various subplots.
During the funeral, Judd informs Diana about the mysterious funding, Jackson learns of another Slow Horse’s death from Roddy Ho, and a resentful Lady Di reveals to Catherine that Jackson was responsible for the death of her former boss, Charles Partner. River also delivers a eulogy about his grandfather’s uneventful career in the Department of Transport, prompting unexpected laughter from Jackson amidst the somber atmosphere.

The episode concludes with a shocking moment as River spots his estranged father, the dangerous American mercenary Frank Harkness, observing the funeral from a distance. River attempts to pursue him, but Harkness escapes before they can confront each other, leaving his motives and his connection to the murders of former Slow Horses unresolved as the second episode approaches.
With a hidden financier, a missing assassin father, and a team that has literally been erased from existence on paper, “Circle of Life” sets the stage for one of the most ominous seasons the show has ever attempted.
