The 2026 domestic box office is shaping up to be one of the strongest years in recent memory, with numerous studios celebrating significant successes and several billion-dollar hits already recorded. However, not all major players are enjoying this success equally, and the disparity between the industry’s winners and losers has become increasingly evident.

Warner Bros. has faced a particularly tough time, entering September without a single domestic release surpassing $100 million. This marks the first occurrence of such a drought for the studio in 25 years, excluding the pandemic-affected year of 2020. In contrast, every other major studio has managed to have at least two films cross that threshold domestically in 2026, making Warner Bros.’ shutout all the more pronounced, especially with high-profile releases like ‘Supergirl’ and ‘The Bride!’ both proving to be costly letdowns.

This challenging situation has led to a notable shift in the year-to-date studio rankings. According to a breakdown of the 2026 domestic box office race, both Warner Bros. and Paramount have been pushed out of the top five highest-grossing studios this year. Universal is currently in the lead with $1.43 billion, followed by Sony at $1.18 billion, Disney at $1.05 billion, Amazon MGM at $557 million, and Lionsgate rounding out the list at $518 million.

Universal’s top position is largely attributed to the success of Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ and Illumination’s ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie,’ both of which have solidified the studio’s reputation as one of the most consistent performers of the year. Sony, on the other hand, owes much of its second-place ranking to ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ which opened to the largest domestic debut in history and continues to climb toward $1.665 billion worldwide.

Warner Bros.’ absence from the top five starkly contrasts with its dominant performance in 2025, when the studio amassed over $1.8 billion domestically. This year’s lineup has generated only a fraction of that total, with ‘Wuthering Heights’ being the studio’s highest-grossing release, despite only reaching $241 million worldwide.

Paramount has not fared much better, continuing a downward trend that has persisted through multiple ownership changes in recent years. Both studios now find themselves trailing not only the traditional major players but also Amazon MGM, a relatively new full-scale theatrical distributor that has only been operating at this level since the beginning of 2026, and Lionsgate, a mid-sized studio that has spent years re-establishing its relevance.

The timing of these developments adds an extra layer of intrigue, especially amid ongoing discussions regarding a potential Paramount-Warner Bros. merger. The theatrical struggles of both studios raise questions about what a combined entity would inherit in terms of box office performance. For now, the remainder of 2026 still holds potential turnaround opportunities for Warner Bros., including ‘Dune: Part Three,’ which could provide the studio with its best chance at a true tentpole hit before the year concludes.
