The ‘Hunger Games’ franchise has established its legacy by compelling audiences to witness children fighting for survival under a tyrannical regime, with each new installment intensifying that brutality. Following ‘The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes,’ which explored Panem’s darker history three years ago, fans have eagerly awaited the next chapter in this gripping saga.

This anticipation focuses on Haymitch Abernathy, the sharp-witted mentor first portrayed by Woody Harrelson in the original trilogy. ‘Sunrise on the Reaping’ takes us back to a sixteen-year-old Haymitch as he competes in the 50th Hunger Games, known as the Second Quarter Quell, a particularly savage edition that doubles the usual tribute count to 48 children instead of 24.

Lionsgate has unveiled a new trailer for ‘The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping,’ drawing audiences back into the world of Panem ahead of the film’s release in theaters and IMAX on November 20. The studio shared the clip with the message “Witness the beginning of the revolution,” further heightening excitement for what many are already calling one of the most emotionally harrowing entries in the franchise.

Joseph Zada stars as young Haymitch, alongside Mckenna Grace as fellow tribute Maysilee Donner and Ben Wang as District 12 competitor Wyatt Callow. The new trailer emphasizes Haymitch’s developing relationship with Maysilee while also teasing his early tensions with a young Coriolanus Snow, offering fans a deeper understanding of the dynamics that will fuel Haymitch’s future resentment toward the Capitol.

The Second Quarter Quell serves as a demonstration of the Capitol’s power, designed to remind the districts of its total control by forcing double the usual number of tributes into the arena. This unprecedented pool of 48 competitors distinguishes ‘Sunrise on the Reaping’ from earlier installments, promising a level of violence and loss that even devoted fans of the franchise’s darker themes may find overwhelming.

Francis Lawrence returns to direct, continuing his involvement with the franchise since ‘Catching Fire,’ working from a screenplay by Billy Ray and Michael Lesslie based on Suzanne Collins’ 2025 novel. The film also features several original trilogy characters in younger forms, portrayed by a cast that includes Elle Fanning, Kieran Culkin, Whitney Peak, Maya Hawke, Kelvin Harrison Jr., Ralph Fiennes as President Snow, and Jesse Plemons as a young Plutarch Heavensbee.

As the November 20 release date approaches and Lionsgate intensifies its marketing efforts through trailers and new poster art, ‘Sunrise on the Reaping’ appears set to deliver one of the most heart-wrenching chapters the franchise has ever attempted. Given the earlier films’ willingness to explore themes of grief and loss, this latest trailer suggests that audiences should prepare themselves for an emotional journey.
