Quentin Tarantino Refuses to Watch ‘The Hunger Games’ for a Passionate Reason

Quentin Tarantino has established himself as one of the most outspoken voices in contemporary American cinema, never hesitating to express his opinions on the works of other filmmakers. This candidness, however, risks casting him in the role of the “out-of-touch old director” he has always aimed to avoid, especially as he continues to postpone production on what he has called his tenth and final film.

With this extra time on his hands, Tarantino has taken the opportunity to voice his opinions publicly, and one particular grievance keeps coming up. He has long praised the 2000 Japanese film ‘Battle Royale’ as one of his all-time favorites, a connection rooted in his friendship with director Kinji Fukasaku, who once invited Tarantino to a private screening while he was in Japan scouting for ‘Kill Bill.’

This loyalty to ‘Battle Royale’ has led to his outright refusal to watch a certain highly popular franchise that he believes has copied the film entirely. Tarantino has stated that there is one movie he will never watch on principle, naming ‘The Hunger Games’ as the source of his frustration.

During a podcast appearance, Tarantino expressed his annoyance at how closely he feels ‘The Hunger Games’ resembles ‘Battle Royale’s premise of teenagers forced by a totalitarian regime into a deadly competition. He even questioned why the Japanese writer didn’t sue Suzanne Collins, suggesting that book critics have overlooked the connection because they haven’t seen the lesser-known Japanese film.

Despite his refusal to engage with the franchise, Tarantino made it clear that he has respect for its star. He expressed admiration for Jennifer Lawrence as an actress and mentioned that he would love to collaborate with her in the future, but not in her role as Katniss Everdeen, emphasizing that his issue lies with the franchise’s premise rather than the individuals involved in its creation.

Not everyone associated with ‘The Hunger Games’ has accepted Tarantino’s criticism without response. Franchise star Josh Hutcherson countered the comparison, arguing that in a time when original ideas are increasingly scarce, stories are bound to resonate with one another without necessarily being a copy. Author Suzanne Collins has also previously denied that her series was inspired by ‘Battle Royale.’

Ironically, critics have noted that Tarantino’s own body of work is famously built on paying homage to, and sometimes directly borrowing from, the films he admires, making his stance against ‘The Hunger Games’ particularly noteworthy given his well-documented influences. Whether or not the comparison to ‘Battle Royale’ stands, it is evident that Tarantino has no intention of changing his position anytime soon.
