‘Heated Rivalry‘ debuted with little fanfare in November 2025, yet this Canadian hockey romance quickly became a word-of-mouth sensation in the streaming landscape. Centered around the secret relationship between two closeted professional hockey players, the series soared to the top of HBO Max’s charts, transforming its leads into breakout stars almost overnight.

The show’s success prompted an unusually swift renewal, with Crave and HBO Max confirming a second season shortly after the first concluded. Season 2 will adapt Rachel Reid’s novel ‘The Long Game,’ the sequel in her ‘Game Changers’ series, which will introduce a host of new characters to the narrative of Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov.

The cast is expanding once again. A recent casting announcement revealed that Brendan Morgan will join the series as Zane Boodram, adding another layer to the growing ensemble as production on the second season continues.

Boodram is recognized in the book series as the alternate captain of the Ottawa Centaurs, known for hosting team barbecue nights, which gives him a relatable, community-focused presence in the hockey world depicted in the show. His addition aligns with Season 2’s trend of introducing new players and storylines that extend beyond the central romance that defined the first season.

Morgan’s casting follows several other recent additions to the ‘Heated Rivalry’ lineup. Justice Smith and Charlie Gillespie were previously announced for the roles of Harris and Troy, with series creator Jacob Tierney and executive producer Brendan Brady commending their ability to connect with the vulnerability and resilience central to their characters. Daniel Diemer and Shaheen Jafargholi have also joined as Ryan Price and Fabian Salah, characters described by Tierney and Brady as bold, complex, and deeply engaging additions to the world Reid has crafted.

Production for Season 2 officially began in Toronto in early August, with returning stars Hudson Williams and Connor Storrie reprising their roles as Shane and Ilya alongside the newly expanded cast. Tierney previously shared with Entertainment Weekly that he did not intend for the wait between seasons to extend nearly two years, aiming to deliver new episodes as swiftly as possible while maintaining the show’s quality.

This sense of urgency reflects the ongoing attention the series has garnered since its debut. Williams and Storrie were even selected as official torchbearers for the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026 torch relay, highlighting the show’s cultural impact that has transcended typical streaming buzz.

While an exact premiere date has yet to be confirmed, Tierney has indicated that Season 2 is expected to premiere sometime in 2027, with some reports suggesting an April release window. The creator has also confirmed that the second season will likely follow a tighter six-episode format, similar to the first season, favoring a more concise storytelling approach over a longer episode count.

With production in full swing and new cast members like Morgan continuing to enhance the ensemble, ‘Heated Rivalry’ seems poised for a second season that significantly expands its universe while remaining true to the central romance that made the show an unexpected success. Given the rapid rise of the series into a genuine phenomenon, anticipation for these new character introductions is sure to grow in the coming months.
