The ‘Stranger Things’ universe was always bound to make waves again. Following the live-action flagship’s grand finale, Netflix continued to explore the eerie town of Hawkins with its first animated spinoff, ‘Stranger Things: Tales From ’85’.

This series, which features all 10 episodes available on Netflix, is set during the winter of 1985, neatly fitting between the events of Season 2 and Season 3. It introduces a new voice cast for the Party’s familiar adventures, with Brooklyn Davey Norstedt voicing Eleven, Luca Diaz as Mike, and Braxton Quinney taking on Dustin. This recasting has sparked mixed reactions among long-time fans.

Most episodes unfold in a vignette style, focusing less on the overarching mythology that characterizes the main series. However, the finale shifts this narrative. It reveals that the new monsters terrorizing Hawkins were unleashed by Dan Fischer, the seemingly friendly boyfriend of Nikki’s mother, who conducted experiments on stolen Upside Down specimens.

Throughout the season, Eleven, Mike, Dustin, and the rest of the Party battle a series of evolving plant-based creatures, distinct from the Demogorgons and the Mind Flayer. Fischer believes he has control over the largest of these creatures, a vine-based entity known as the Queen, using her desire for a green growth substance to keep her contained.

However, this control is merely an illusion. In the finale, the Queen seizes a supply of the growth substance and escapes, driven by an instinct to return to her origins in the Upside Down.

Once liberated, the Queen begins to open a new gate to the Upside Down, confirming suspicions that these creatures possess the same dimension-crossing abilities as the classic monsters from the main series. The Party manages to defeat her before the gate becomes a significant threat, resolving the season’s main conflict.

However, the episode’s conclusion leaves lingering tension. In the final moments, the Queen’s corpse is shown in the Upside Down, with a small blue flower sprouting from her body, resembling a Demogorgon’s mouth, all set to Vera Lynn’s ‘We’ll Meet Again.’ This unsettling image suggests that the dangers in Hawkins are far from over.

This cliffhanger is significant because ‘Tales From ’85’ exists in a state of “frozen time,” meaning all plot threads must revert to where Season 3 of the main series begins. With Nikki Baxter still in Hawkins by the end of the finale, rather than following her mother’s usual pattern of leaving, the series leaves ample room for a second season before continuity must reset.

The finale also wraps up on a more personal note. Nikki and her mother Anna decide to remain in Hawkins instead of leaving town, unpacking boxes in their new home as the episode concludes. Nikki is welcomed into the group’s next Dungeons & Dragons campaign, complete with a character crafted from spare LEGO pieces. Meanwhile, Hopper extends Eleven’s curfew, a subtle indication that the Party has earned a bit more freedom after once again saving the town.

For the actors stepping into these iconic roles, the transition to animation has been rewarding. Braxton Quinney, who voices Dustin, noted that voice acting allows for a unique freedom, stating, “no one cares about what you look like, you can just go into the booth, shut the door and completely turn into the character you want to be.”

Whether or not the flower-mouthed final image will be addressed in a second season, ‘Tales From ’85’ has established itself as more than just a one-off project. With the Duffer Brothers, Shawn Levy, and showrunner Eric Robles at the helm, the series treats its animated format as a genuine expansion of the ‘Stranger Things’ universe, leaving enough mystery to keep viewers intrigued.
