SYFY’s ‘The Ark’ has navigated a tumultuous third season, balancing moments of hope with deep despair. By the end of episode 7, viewers were left bracing for the next developments, questioning whether the crew of Ark One had any goodwill remaining.

In episode 8, titled “By Any Means Necessary,” the narrative quickly addresses these concerns. The episode focuses on the aftermath of the EF ship crash, the escalating turmoil within Brice’s mind, and a shadowy group known as Black Thorn that has been operating behind the scenes at Homebase-1.

The most shocking revelation hits early on: Zed discovers that his son was on board EF-1 during the crash. After a fleeting moment of hope for potential survivors, the episode confirms that the season has already exhausted its one miracle. This brutal twist deeply affects Zed, who has been striving to build trust across enemy lines, plunging him into a cycle of grief and misplaced anger.

Zed’s anguish leads him to seek someone to blame. Despite the ongoing strife between the GSA and the Eastern Front back on Earth, Zed had put aside past loyalties to find common ground with Sharon Garnet and the Ark One team. This earned trust makes the news about his son even more devastating, prompting Zed to momentarily direct his pain toward Garnet herself.

However, the show quickly addresses this anger. Garnet steps in to help Zed navigate his guilt, providing Christie Burke with one of her most powerful scenes of the season and strengthening the bond between two characters who typically keep their defenses up.

Their connection proves beneficial when Garnet and Zed work together to track down Ves, a member of the enigmatic Black Thorn group, whose involvement in the episode’s central mystery runs deeper than anticipated. Complicating matters, Kabir’s ex-husband Marsh is revealed to have ties to Black Thorn, and the news of her ex-husband Milan’s death, potentially at Marsh’s hands, forces Kabir to confront old wounds while assisting the team in deciphering a crucial four-digit code.

When Ark One’s team finally confronts Ves, the encounter resolves one mystery while introducing another. Black Thorn did not shoot down the Eastern Front ship, indicating that the true culprits remain unidentified. However, Ves is far from innocent, having opened fire on unarmed individuals out of sheer prejudice.

The episode strongly suggests that the indigenous population of Homebase-1 is responsible for downing EF-1, having witnessed Ves and her followers attack unarmed civilians in what was likely their first interaction with Earthlings. Coupled with the painful effects of the colony’s generators, this presents a grim rationale for why the population has resorted to capturing and holding people instead of attempting communication.

As the episode nears its conclusion, it shifts focus back to Brice, whose condition continues to deteriorate as the entity known as Doc tightens her grip on his mind. As Ark One returns to Homebase-1, Doc leads Brice into the woods, having made it clear throughout the season that he is the key to her salvation. The hour concludes with Kelly and Angus facing threats of death from the same mysterious group unless they repair an unidentified object.

This object may be linked to the very issue Doc has been urging Brice to resolve, a thread that ‘The Ark’ star Christie Burke has hinted will connect directly to the season’s trajectory. She noted in an interview with TV Fanatic that everything occurring this season is intertwined. With Kelly and Angus’s whereabouts unknown to the rest of the crew, the episode ends on a note of quiet dread rather than a tidy resolution.

As the season approaches its conclusion with four episodes remaining, “By Any Means Necessary” leaves numerous threads unresolved: the true identity of whoever shot down EF-1, the fate of Kelly and Angus, and whether Brice can reclaim the memories Doc seems to have stripped from him, including any trace of his connection to Eva. The hour also raises the possibility that Black Thorn’s narrative is far from over, even with Ves now in custody.
