DC Studios has been diligently reconstructing its cinematic universe under the leadership of James Gunn and Peter Safran. This effort blends traditional superhero elements with innovative tonal experiments across its expanding Chapter One: Gods and Monsters slate. Among these experiments, the upcoming film ‘Clayface’ stands out as it delves into the darker aspects of one of Batman’s more tragic villains.

‘Clayface’ is a body horror film that reinterprets the classic shapeshifting antagonist through a more psychologically unsettling lens than any previous DC Studios project. Anticipation for the film has been steadily building, fueled by a series of increasingly disturbing promotional artworks.

The latest addition to this campaign is a striking new poster created by artist Orlando Arocena, shared ahead of the film’s theatrical release on October 23. The haunting image features a skull-like face dripping with melting clay and flame, overshadowing a small human silhouette below, prompting fans to speculate about the potential release of a full trailer soon.

In ‘Clayface,’ Matt Hagen, portrayed by Tom Rhys Harries, is a rising Hollywood actor whose life is shattered after a brutal attack leaves him disfigured. In a desperate attempt to regain his former appearance, Hagen opts for an experimental treatment that initially appears successful, only for it to trigger horrifying side effects that gradually transform him into living clay.

Directed by James Watkins, with a screenplay by Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini based on Flanagan’s original story, the film represents a significant shift for DC Studios. It combines traditional superhero mythology with spine-chilling body horror, moving away from the action-driven narratives that have characterized much of the studio’s recent work.

The marketing campaign has effectively harnessed the power of mystery by deliberately withholding key visuals. Watkins has openly discussed his strategy of keeping Clayface’s fully transformed monster form out of promotional materials. “You don’t want to show the shark,” he explained. “I think people give away too much… I believe in the power of mystery and the power of suggestion and the power of people putting two and two together. I think it’s more fun,” he told Entertainment Weekly.

This approach has influenced every poster released thus far, each hinting at Hagen’s transformation through fragmented and distorted imagery rather than revealing the creature itself. DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran has previously described the project as “an incredible body horror film that reveals a compelling origin of a classic Batman villain,” underscoring the studio’s serious commitment to this genre shift.

Alongside Harries, the film features Naomi Ackie, David Dencik, Max Minghella, and Eddie Marsan, with Nancy Carroll and Joshua James rounding out the supporting cast. Producers include Matt Reeves and Lynn Harris, alongside Gunn and Safran, linking the project to the filmmaker behind ‘The Batman’ while allowing ‘Clayface’ to carve its own distinct tonal path within the DCU.

Filming took place in Liverpool and on soundstages at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in England, running from late August through early November of last year. This timeline provided a compact yet intensive shooting schedule for a film centered around such an ambitious practical and visual transformation.

‘Clayface’ will be released exclusively in theaters and IMAX across North America on October 23, with an international release set for October 21. As Halloween approaches, the film is positioned as one of the more high-profile horror releases this fall, especially with the DC brand recognition attached.

Whether a full trailer will drop soon to accompany this latest poster remains to be seen, but ‘Clayface’ has undoubtedly succeeded in generating genuine intrigue through its air of mystery.
