‘Stuart Fails to Save the Universe‘ has taken viewers on a wild ride throughout its first season, showcasing its clumsy protagonist navigating through a series of warped realities. By now, fans have come to anticipate a delightful blend of comic-book antics and subtle domestic humor. The HBO Max spinoff of ‘The Big Bang Theory’ has carved out its niche by placing Stuart, Denise, Bert, and Kripke in increasingly surreal versions of their familiar world.

In this penultimate episode of Season 1, the narrative dives into a setting the writers have clearly been eager to explore: the pages of a comic book. With the multiverse continuing to fracture and entire galaxies disappearing, the stakes felt higher than ever as the episode unfolded.

Episode 9, titled ‘Spoiler: We Couldn’t Get Green Lantern,’ finds Stuart (Kevin Sussman), Denise (Lauren Lapkus), Bert (Brian Posehn), and Kripke (John Ross Bowie) trapped inside a comic book on display at the Pasadena store. They navigate through Gotham City and Central City in their quest to return home, and the title humorously reveals which DC hero is notably absent.

Instead of Green Lantern, the group receives help from the Golden Age Flash, Jay Garrick, portrayed by Andy Ridings. Co-creator Chuck Lorre explained to TV Guide that the absence of Green Lantern was more about scheduling conflicts than creative decisions, as the character was already committed to another HBO project. “They have a zillion dollars riding on ‘Lanterns,’” he noted, “so they were not about to let us make fun of Green Lantern.”

The absence of Green Lantern wasn’t the only notable shift in the DC universe. The episode’s antagonist is Mister Freeze, played by Eric Allan Kramer, even though Stuart points out that Freeze is primarily a Batman villain and shouldn’t be battling alongside The Flash. Co-creator Zak Penn mentioned that this intentional mismatch reflects the characters’ tendency to notice and comment on such continuity errors, “because that’s what these characters would do.”

Mayim Bialik also makes a return as yet another alternate version of Amy Farrah Fowler, this time married to Garrick’s Flash, rather than her previous role as Stuart’s psychiatrist. Riki Lindhome appears again as a Gotham City flight attendant, continuing to weave ‘The Big Bang Theory’ alumni into Stuart’s adventures without relying on Sheldon, Leonard, or the show’s other main characters.

Much of the episode’s humor stems from juxtaposing a comic-book setting with mundane inconveniences rather than relentless heroics. Co-creator Bill Prady shared with TVLine that the writers aimed for Stuart to leverage his extensive nerd knowledge in a world that otherwise resembles ordinary life, highlighting gags centered around airport delays and a secret superhero closet. “[We got] to have Stuart have that knowledge and then exist in that world,” Prady explained, “but exist in the ordinary, dull parts of the world.” Lorre added that this approach led to one of his favorite moments of the season: Stuart narrating an off-screen super-speed battle between Flash and Mister Freeze that the show couldn’t afford to film. “It’s radio,” Prady quipped about the scene.

Lorre also highlighted a recurring gag featuring Freeze slipping on his own ice. “I like a supervillain who slips on ice, even though he creates nothing but ice and snow,” he remarked. “That I found charming.”

As for how Stuart and his friends escape, the Golden Age Flash ultimately guides them back to the comic and back to the Pasadena shop. However, ‘Spoiler: We Couldn’t Get Green Lantern’ delivers a shocking twist at the end: the comic book store they’ve been trying to return to for nine episodes has vanished, leaving behind a void of nothingness.

This dark conclusion sets a somber tone for the penultimate episode, especially as the multiverse-collapse storyline approaches its climax. With the season finale scheduled for September 24 and a second season already confirmed, this void revelation opens up numerous possibilities for a genuinely high-stakes conclusion.
