Nielsen Streaming Ratings: ‘Reacher,’ ‘Outer Banks’ and ‘Beauty in Black’ Dominate
Streaming viewership has often felt like a mystery for casual viewers, with platforms typically showcasing only the metrics that highlight their successes. Nielsen’s weekly Top 10 charts have been one of the few independent insights into what truly captures audience attention, despite the frustrating delay in reporting.
That delay has now been significantly reduced. Nielsen has announced an overhaul of its reporting process, shortening the lag on its streaming charts from four weeks to just two, providing the industry with a more timely understanding of audience behavior.
To bring everyone up to speed with the new system, Nielsen released three weeks of data simultaneously, covering the period from August 17 to September 6. The results highlighted which shows dominated the end of summer streaming: Prime Video’s ‘Reacher,’ alongside Netflix’s ‘Outer Banks’ and ‘Beauty in Black,’ battled for the top spots on the charts throughout these weeks.
‘Reacher’ kicked off this period in the lead, with the Alan Ritchson-led action series amassing 1.5 billion minutes during the week of August 17, boosted by the release of its fourth season just days earlier on August 12. This impressive figure underscores the show’s status as a consistent powerhouse for Prime Video with each new season launch.

The following week, the scenario shifted. ‘Reacher’ saw a slight decline to 1.45 billion minutes, while two Netflix titles surged ahead. ‘Outer Banks,’ which concluded its fifth and final season on August 20, rose from 1.46 billion to 1.49 billion minutes, claiming the top position, while Tyler Perry’s ‘Beauty in Black’ kept pace with ‘Reacher’ at 1.45 billion minutes.

By the week of August 31, ‘Reacher’ regained the No. 1 position for the third time since its fourth season began, even as its viewership dipped further to 1.25 billion minutes. ‘Beauty in Black’ closely followed with 1.06 billion minutes, landing at No. 3 on the overall chart that week, edged out of the No. 2 spot by HBO Max’s ‘The Big Bang Theory,’ which garnered 1.07 billion minutes. Meanwhile, ‘Outer Banks’ fell significantly, dropping to No. 8 with 762 million minutes as interest in its final season waned.

This change is not merely a technical adjustment for data enthusiasts. Nielsen’s senior vice president of product strategy and thought leadership, Brian Fuhrer, noted that this enhancement could be the most significant improvement to the company’s streaming measurement since the ratings system was introduced in 2017. He emphasized that as the media landscape evolves rapidly, providing clients with more immediate audience data is crucial to understanding consumer behavior.
This immediacy is vital for an industry that increasingly relies on early viewership signals to make swift decisions regarding renewals, marketing budgets, and promotional strategies. A month-old view of audience behavior is considerably less useful than one that is only two weeks outdated, particularly in a climate where shows can fluctuate in popularity within days.
The same data release also highlighted notable movements elsewhere on the charts. HBO’s ‘Lanterns’ finally made its mark on Nielsen’s acquired programming chart during the week of August 31, landing at No. 8 with 500 million minutes viewed after its August 16 launch. Netflix’s ‘The Gentlemen’ also gained attention following its second season release on September 3, attracting 722 million minutes and securing the No. 7 position among streaming originals for the week.
Overall, the three-week data release illustrates a streaming landscape where dominance is not guaranteed week-to-week, even for established hits. ‘Reacher,’ ‘Outer Banks,’ and ‘Beauty in Black’ all demonstrated their ability to top the charts during this period, but none managed to maintain the crown for more than a week at a time.
