‘Avengers: Endgame Encore’ Set to Break 14-Year Box Office Record
Marvel has consistently drawn fans back to theaters for another look at its major hits, but the rollout for ‘Avengers: Endgame’’s latest theatrical return is proving to be quite extraordinary. What started as a simple plan to excite audiences ahead of ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ has transformed into one of the most closely monitored re-release campaigns in recent history.
The momentum began building when tickets went on sale in August, as the film shattered the record for the century’s biggest first-day pre-sales for any theatrical re-release within just hours, surpassing the previous record held by ‘Titanic’’s 2012 3D re-release for 14 years. The presale figures indicated that ‘Endgame Encore’ was not merely riding on nostalgia but was generating significant box office excitement.
Now, with the re-release set for September 25, industry tracking suggests that ‘Endgame Encore’ could achieve an even greater milestone: officially becoming the biggest opening weekend of all time for a theatrical re-release. Current projections estimate the film could earn between $22 million and $27 million domestically through Sunday, potentially surpassing ‘Titanic 3D’’s $25.6 million opening weekend, a record that has stood for over a decade.

Unlike typical theatrical revivals, ‘Endgame Encore’ is not just the same 2019 cut being re-released for nostalgic fans. This new version features a custom introduction, altered color grading, adjusted dialogue, and, most importantly, new footage that connects the story to December’s ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’
This added content appears to be a significant factor in driving the film’s box office momentum. Director Joe Russo mentioned to Fandango that ‘Endgame Encore’ is essential viewing for following the story in ‘Doomsday,’ emphasizing that this isn’t merely a nostalgic revisit but an active setup for the next chapter of the franchise.

The re-release is also being promoted as a flagship title for Disney’s new Infinity Vision program, which aims to provide a premium large-format experience to moviegoers in participating cinemas worldwide. This marketing strategy, combined with the genuine narrative stakes for ‘Doomsday,’ gives ‘Endgame Encore’ a unique selling point that most re-releases lack.
It’s important to note that the overall domestic record for any theatrical re-release still belongs to the 1997 Special Edition of the original ‘Star Wars,’ which grossed approximately $138 million during its run. In contrast, ‘Titanic 3D’’s opening weekend record reflects the modern, big-format re-release era that ‘Endgame Encore’ is now set to challenge.
Surpassing the ‘Titanic 3D’ benchmark would not only be a symbolic victory but also mark the second time ‘Endgame’ has broken a box office record held by ‘Titanic,’ following its historic achievement in 2019 when it surpassed ‘Titanic’’s worldwide gross just two weekends into its original theatrical run, a moment acknowledged by James Cameron himself.
There’s also a larger prize at stake. ‘Endgame’ currently ranks as the second-highest-grossing film of all time worldwide, trailing ‘Avatar’ by a narrowing margin. A strong opening weekend for ‘Encore,’ along with any additional international earnings, could bring that all-time global record back within reach for a film that few expected to continue making box office history seven years later.
With ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ set to hit theaters this December, the performance of ‘Endgame Encore’ during its opening weekend will provide an early indication of the audience’s appetite for the next chapter in the Multiverse Saga. If the current tracking holds, Marvel may soon demonstrate that even a film audiences have already seen can still draw crowds better than almost anything else currently available.
