Will Smith’s 2007 post-apocalyptic thriller has captivated fans for nearly two decades, thanks to its haunting portrayal of a lone survivor in an empty New York City. Despite grossing $585 million worldwide against a $150 million budget, ‘I Am Legend’ never received the sequel many anticipated, leaving fans in limbo for years.

That wait seemed to be coming to an end in 2022 when Warner Bros. confirmed that Smith and Michael B. Jordan would star in and co-produce a long-awaited sequel, with original screenwriter Akiva Goldsman returning to write the script. However, updates on the project’s actual progress have been frustratingly few, leading fans to speculate whether the film was stalling.

Goldsman has now provided his most candid update yet on the sequel’s development, revealing that the project remains genuinely challenging to get off the ground despite his unwavering commitment. He stated, “I have run up against a series of obstacles that I refuse to allow to defeat me,” as reported by Radio Times.

Despite these setbacks, Goldsman emphasized that the team is actively pushing forward, asserting they are doing everything possible to bring the film to fruition. This determination contrasts with several other long-gestating sequels that have quietly been abandoned after encountering similar creative or logistical hurdles.

The sequel is set to follow directly from the alternate ending of the original film, where Robert Neville survives instead of sacrificing himself for humanity. In this version, Neville realizes the infected Darkseekers were only trying to recover a captive test subject he had taken, leading him to abandon his research and journey to a survivors’ camp in Vermont alongside Alice Braga’s Anna.

Goldsman has confirmed that the sequel will take place several decades after those events, drawing inspiration from “The Last of Us” to depict how nature has reclaimed the ruins of civilization since society’s collapse. This timeline allows for an exploration of a new chapter in humanity’s survival, rather than simply picking up where the first film left off.

One detail Goldsman was quick to clarify is the fate of any canine companions in the new film. Still feeling the backlash from the death of Neville’s German Shepherd Sam in the original movie, Goldsman humorously noted that he wouldn’t survive another fan reaction if he killed off another dog, pointing out that audiences seemed more affected by Sam’s death than by the near-total extinction of humanity depicted in the same film.

Goldsman’s dedication to the project is a stark contrast to other long-delayed sequels that have faded away after key creative figures moved on or lost interest, such as a fourth “Spider-Man” film and a follow-up to “Dredd.” Given the number of long-gestating sequels that have quietly died in development, Goldsman’s persistence suggests ‘I Am Legend 2’ still has a genuine chance of eventually reaching production.

However, extended development periods carry their own risks, as some franchises lose cultural relevance the longer they remain in limbo. For every long-delayed sequel that successfully recaptures its original magic, there are equally cautionary tales of follow-ups that arrive too late to resonate with audiences as their predecessors did.

With Goldsman continuing to navigate the obstacles in the way, fans of the original film will likely be keeping a close eye on any further updates regarding when ‘I Am Legend 2’ might finally transition from script to screen. For now, the project remains very much alive, even if its path forward continues to be more challenging than anyone initially expected.
