Florence Pugh and Zoe Kazan Promote ‘East of Eden’ Ahead of Netflix Release Date
Adapting one of the most renowned American novels of the 20th century is no small feat, especially when your family has a legendary version to uphold. Netflix’s forthcoming adaptation of John Steinbeck’s ‘East of Eden’ carries this significant weight, and its stars are stepping into the limelight to promote it.
Florence Pugh and Zoe Kazan captured attention at an advance screening for the series, posing for photos in anticipation of its release. This event marked one of the first major public appearances for a project that has reportedly been in development since 2020.

Kazan is not only in front of the cameras for press events; she also wrote and adapted the series, serving as an executive producer on the seven-part limited series that reimagines Steinbeck’s expansive multi-generational saga for contemporary audiences.
The connection to ‘East of Eden’ is particularly personal for Kazan, whose grandfather Elia Kazan directed the acclaimed 1955 film adaptation of the novel. Discovering this family history while developing her own interpretation felt almost destined. “They had ‘East of Eden,’ and I was like, ‘I guess the gods are conspiring,’” she shared with Time.

This family connection influenced her creative approach rather than deterring her. “I don’t think I’d be doing my job as an artist if I weren’t thinking about my family while making this family story,” she explained, framing the adaptation as both a professional endeavor and a deeply personal journey.

Pugh portrays Cathy Ames, a character Kazan describes as intricately layered. She referred to Cathy as “irredeemable, irresistible, and so full of agency,” acknowledging the character’s complex legacy as one of Steinbeck’s most controversial figures.
Kazan even highlighted Steinbeck’s own conflicted feelings while writing the character, noting that his tone shifted dramatically throughout the novel. “He starts out like, ‘You’ve never read a monster like this,’ then he starts referring to her like, ‘I’ll finally get back to my dear Cathy,’” she remarked.
“Good and evil are a choice.”

Beyond Cathy’s individual storyline, Kazan has framed the series around broader thematic ambitions tied to the source material’s exploration of generational conflict. “For me, the power of the story is how, over 50 years, it shows history repeating itself, or not,” she explained, describing a narrative that spans from the Civil War era through World War I.
She also discussed pitching the show around themes of national self-reflection, arguing that the novel’s central tension between good and evil reflects something larger about the country itself. “I talked about America and the way that we don’t want to look at our shadow, and how the book argues that embracing your shadow, all of yourself, the good and the bad, is the only way to change,” she said.
This ambition places ‘East of Eden’ among Netflix’s more prestigious literary adaptations arriving this fall, alongside the streamer’s upcoming version of ‘Pride and Prejudice’ starring Emma Corrin and Jack Lowden. Both projects indicate Netflix is leaning further into star-studded, awards-conscious literary television as the fall season approaches.
Christopher Abbott plays Adam Trask opposite Pugh’s Cathy, with Mike Faist as Charles Trask and Ciarán Hinds as Samuel Hamilton rounding out key supporting roles. Joseph Zada and Joe Anders portray the Trask twins, Cal and Aron, whose sibling rivalry echoes the story’s biblical inspiration.
Garth Davis directs the first four episodes, with Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre taking over for the final three. ‘East of Eden’ premieres on Netflix on October 1, giving viewers a chance to see how Kazan’s version compares to her grandfather’s legacy nearly 70 years later.
Dividing directing duties between two filmmakers across the season allows the adaptation to shift tone as the story progresses through its various eras, something the original film, constrained to a single feature-length runtime, could not fully achieve. A seven-episode structure enables Kazan’s script to delve into each generation of the Trask family, rather than condensing decades of history into a few scenes.
