Hans Zimmer Shares His Unique Approach to Scoring HBO’s ‘Harry Potter’ Series
John Williams’ iconic score for the original ‘Harry Potter‘ films is one of the most recognizable in cinematic history, with “Hedwig’s Theme” able to instantly transport fans back to Hogwarts. This legacy is what HBO’s upcoming ‘Harry Potter’ series must navigate as it seeks to establish its own identity.
Composer Hans Zimmer has been chosen to score the new series, and he has made it clear that he will not attempt to replicate Williams’ work. Instead of reworking familiar musical themes, Zimmer is embarking on a completely new journey for the return of the wizarding world.
Zimmer stated, “I can’t write like John Williams, but even if I could, I would try to stay away as far as possible and try to be original,” as reported by Variety. This candid admission from one of the most celebrated composers today highlights the distinct sound HBO’s ‘Harry Potter’ aims to achieve compared to its film predecessor.
This isn’t the first time Zimmer has faced the challenge of following in Williams’ footsteps. He drew parallels to his experience scoring 2013’s ‘Man of Steel,’ recalling, “for three months I was running around going, ‘I don’t know. I can’t do this. I can’t do this because it’s John Williams. John Williams is — it’s brilliant! It’s brilliant!’”
Zimmer faced significant pressure while working on the Zack Snyder-directed Superman film, as Williams had already created an iconic score for the character back in 1978. He spent months struggling to produce meaningful material, burdened by the weight of living up to a composer he deeply admires.
The breakthrough for Zimmer came from a surprisingly simple conversation with Snyder. “Zack just said the simplest thing to me,” Zimmer recounted. “He said, ‘Hans, it was just a movie. This is just a movie.’ And that was so liberating.”
Zimmer described how this reframing transformed his entire perspective on the project. “It’s just a movie, and my life is all about making music for movies, which I do because I love it. I love the movies, and I love having fun with it,” he said, crediting Snyder’s straightforward viewpoint for freeing him from the burden of comparison.
This same philosophy appears to be guiding his approach to ‘Harry Potter’ now. Instead of viewing Williams’ film scores as an unapproachable benchmark, Zimmer seems determined to allow himself the freedom to create something new and distinct.
Zimmer is not alone in this endeavor. He is collaborating with Bleeding Fingers Music composers Kara Talve and Anže Rozman, the Emmy-winning team he co-founded, to develop original motifs that fit the show’s structure. With each season adapting a single novel, the plan reportedly focuses on crafting new themes suited to television pacing rather than extending film-length compositions over multiple episodes.
This structural difference is significant. A movie score must condense an entire book into a few hours, while a season-long series allows musical ideas to evolve gradually alongside the narrative. Zimmer’s team seems to be embracing this as an opportunity rather than a limitation.

HBO’s ‘Harry Potter’ has already faced scrutiny for existing in the shadow of a beloved film franchise, and the score is one of the most closely observed aspects of this transition. Zimmer’s comments indicate he is approaching the challenge with the same mindset that helped him through ‘Man of Steel’: recognizing the brilliance of what came before without allowing it to dictate his creative choices.
Whether audiences will embrace a new musical identity for Hogwarts remains to be seen once the series premieres. For now, Zimmer’s intent is clear: this will not be Williams’ ‘Harry Potter’ with a fresh coat of paint, but rather a unique sound developed from the ground up.
