Superhero sequels usually follow a familiar pattern at the box office: a huge opening weekend followed by a significant decline as the initial wave of fans diminishes. Most blockbusters are fortunate to still be showing in a few theaters by their second month in cinemas.

However, Tom Holland and Zendaya’s latest adventure as Peter Parker and MJ has completely rewritten that narrative, defying the typical box office trends. What began as a record-breaking opening weekend has transformed into one of the most prolonged theatrical runs in recent memory.

‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ which has already become the highest-grossing film of all time at the domestic box office, shows no signs of slowing down, according to a report from Luiz Fernando. The film earned an impressive $1.5 million on its eighth Friday in theaters, marking only a 23.5% decrease from the previous Friday, despite losing 286 theaters in the process.

Entering its eighth weekend, the film is still showing in over 3,000 theaters, a notably long run for a superhero film at this stage. Such a sustained presence in theaters has become increasingly rare, as studios often shift screen space to newer releases well before the two-month mark.

Industry analysts are now estimating a 3-day domestic weekend total between $4.5 million and $5.5 million for the film’s eighth weekend, numbers that would be considered a solid opening for many mid-tier releases, let alone a holdover this deep into its run.

The film’s domestic total has now reached $939.5 million, putting it $112 million ahead of where ‘Avengers: Endgame’ was at the same point in its release, despite ‘Brand New Day’ starting just $3 million ahead of Endgame’s pace. This widening gap highlights how differently the two films have performed during their theatrical runs.

This isn’t the first time ‘Brand New Day’ has been compared directly to Endgame’s box office legacy. The film previously set a record as the fastest movie to reach $500 million domestically, achieving that milestone in just 7 days compared to Endgame’s 8. It has also surpassed both Endgame and ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ to become the highest-grossing film of all time at the domestic box office.

Much of the film’s longevity can be attributed to strong word-of-mouth and its record-setting opening. ‘Brand New Day’ received an A grade from CinemaScore, making it the 25th MCU film and the sixth live-action Spider-Man movie to earn an A or higher rating from the exit-poll service.

The film also boasts a 90% Certified Fresh rating from critics and a 98% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, tying the MCU’s audience record. This combination of critical acclaim and enthusiastic audience reception likely explains why theaters have continued to showcase the film on more than 3,000 screens long after most blockbusters would have been removed.

Set four years after the memory-altering spell at the end of ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home,’ the film follows Peter Parker as he navigates life as a solitary hero after MJ and Ned no longer recognize him. Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, the film features a cast that includes Tom Holland, Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Jon Favreau, Sadie Sink, Jon Bernthal, and Mark Ruffalo, among others.

With its eighth weekend projected to add several million more to an already historic total, ‘Brand New Day’ shows no signs of concluding its theatrical run anytime soon. Its worldwide gross has also soared past $2 billion, underscoring how far this run has extended beyond the typical domestic-driven blockbuster cycle.

For a franchise that has been active for over two decades with various actors and creative reboots, this kind of late-stage box office endurance is a testament to the audience’s unwavering appetite for Spider-Man.
