Kevin Feige Reveals the Stakes of the Multiverse in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’
Marvel’s multiverse saga has been teasing the concept of realities colliding for years, but the upcoming crossover promises unprecedented destruction. Each trailer and teaser released thus far hints at stakes that far exceed anything the Avengers have faced before.
As the film’s December release approaches, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige is providing fans with a clearer understanding of what “collision” entails this time. His latest remarks indicate that the heroes are facing a situation more dire than a typical team-up mission.
Feige has teased ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ stating, “3 different universes, 3 different Earths, literally colliding with each other. The question then arises: will these heroes kill each other to protect their own worlds, or might they find a way to work together to save all 3 worlds?” This comment frames the film’s central conflict as one of survival rather than a conventional villain showdown.
This framing positions the film’s core dilemma around competing loyalties instead of a singular threat that everyone can unite against. With three separate Earths physically colliding, heroes who have dedicated their lives to protecting their own corners of the multiverse must decide whether saving their home world justifies turning against heroes from another.
This setup provides the film’s ensemble cast with genuine dramatic tension beyond mere spectacle, as audiences will be left guessing which characters will ally and which will become obstacles. It marks a significant departure from previous Avengers films, where the team typically united against a clearly defined common enemy from the start.
The collision reportedly involves heroes from Earth-616, the Fantastic Four’s Earth-828, and a separate universe housing the X-Men, merging characters who have never shared the same reality on screen. This allows Marvel to blend its core Avengers roster with newer additions like the Fantastic Four while also introducing the X-Men into the studio’s mainline continuity for the first time.
Robert Downey Jr. returns in a dramatically different role as Victor Von Doom, taking on the film’s central antagonist position instead of reprising Tony Stark. Chris Evans also returns as Steve Rogers, joining a vast cast that includes Chris Hemsworth, Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart, and Channing Tatum, among many others.
Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, with a script credited to Michael Waldron, Stephen McFeely, Chris McKenna, and Erik Sommers, the film stands as one of the most ambitious productions in the franchise’s history. Principal photography took place from April through September 2025, across Pinewood Studios in England, Windsor Great Park, and Bahrain.
The scale of the shoot reflects the expansive nature of Feige’s comments about the story, featuring a reported cast of over fifty actors and a runtime of approximately 165 minutes. Such a sprawling production illustrates the extensive narrative ground the film needs to cover to accommodate three separate universes’ worth of characters within a single storyline.

‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is set fourteen months after the events of ‘Thunderbolts’ and is scheduled to hit theaters on December 18, distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. It will be immediately followed by ‘Avengers: Secret Wars,’ also directed by the Russo brothers, which is slated for release on December 17 of the following year.
Given the narrative weight that Feige’s comments place on this single film, ‘Doomsday’ appears poised to reshape the trajectory of the entire franchise as it heads into its next saga.
Feige’s approach to framing the story around heroes potentially fighting each other rather than uniting against a common villain signifies a notable shift in tone for the franchise’s largest team-up events. Previous Avengers films have occasionally explored internal conflict, but rarely as the central premise driving the entire plot from the beginning.
This approach also significantly raises the emotional stakes, as audiences will likely spend much of the film uncertain about which alliances will hold and which will fracture under the pressure of protecting three separate worlds. With Doctor Doom now looming as the architect of this collision, ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ seems determined to fulfill years of multiverse buildup.
