Marvel invests significant effort in safeguarding its major films, with the ‘Avengers’ series being particularly challenging to secure. Every trailer, costume image, and rumor ignites fan excitement, leading to a constant battle for the studio’s security team, which often finds itself losing ground. This makes the recent rumor regarding the leak of ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ one of the most closely monitored stories in the fandom at present.

Set to hit theaters on December 18, the film is directed by the Russo brothers and features Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom and Chris Evans reprising his role as Steve Rogers. With ticket presales already soaring and the marketing campaign in full swing, any indication of an early copy is bound to spread rapidly.

Recent posts on X claim that the entire film has leaked online in ultra-high definition. Cosmic Book News reported that these posts allege the movie is available in 2160p, with some suggesting that a leaker possesses a complete copy. However, the outlet emphasized that this claim remains unverified, Marvel has not commented, and it should be regarded as a rumor for the time being.

A second report provided additional details, indicating that a credible peer-to-peer uploader claims to have a 2160p screener copy of the film. ComicBookMovie noted that it could not confirm the validity of this claim beyond the uploader’s reputation, mentioning that the file supposedly lacks audio. Neither report has presented any evidence proving that the film is indeed available.

There is context that lends credibility to the rumor among fans. Cosmic Book News highlighted that previous ‘Doomsday’ leaks had a history of being accurate, such as costume photos that were confirmed when Disney began issuing takedown notices. ComicBookMovie also pointed out that ‘Coyote vs. Acme’ was reportedly available in ultra-high definition just prior to its opening weekend.

The ‘Doomsday’ leak narrative has been developing for months. In June, pixelated footage circulated online, with many fans suspecting it was AI-generated, until an official ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ trailer confirmed that some earlier leaks were indeed real. Disney and Marvel subsequently issued takedown notices, and all four teasers for ‘Doomsday’ had also leaked before their release, according to Yardbarker.

Rumors about the plot have also surfaced, including a detailed breakdown that insiders described as largely accurate, albeit with a few discrepancies. IMDb’s news team reported that it verified a plot leak with at least two trustworthy sources, although reshoots could alter some details. All these reports should be approached with caution, as the most significant claims remain unconfirmed.

If the full movie rumor turns out to be true, past incidents suggest a serious response could follow. Cosmic Book News recalled that the last time a Marvel film leaked in full, the FBI traced the upload to Gilberto Sanchez, a New York glass installer who purchased a bootleg DVD and shared it online. He ultimately pleaded guilty and received a one-year federal prison sentence.

The impact on box office performance can also be significant. The outlet noted that a DVD-quality copy of ‘The Expendables 3’ leaked three weeks prior to its release and was downloaded millions of times, resulting in the film opening to $15.9 million, compared to $34.8 million and $28.6 million for the first two films. Lionsgate subsequently sued the sites hosting the file. Whether a leak truly harms a franchise of this magnitude is difficult to determine, but studios clearly prefer to avoid the risk.

There is one legitimate way to get a glimpse of what’s coming soon. ‘Avengers: Endgame Encore’ is set to arrive in theaters on September 25, and Marvel has confirmed it will include an exclusive look at ‘Doomsday.’ Cosmic Book News reported that standard screenings will feature just under two minutes of new material, while IMAX and Infinity Vision screens will showcase around five minutes, including a new opening and a special end tag.

Filmmaker and editor Robert Meyer Burnett also shared his thoughts on X after being asked if he had seen a rip. He stated he had not, but mentioned that he knows Hulk and Doctor Doom share a new scene in ‘Encore.’ Marvel has not disclosed what the new footage entails, making this detail unofficial.

Even if a copy exists, there are compelling reasons to avoid seeking it out. Pirated files can pose security risks, spoil a narrative that Marvel has meticulously crafted over the years, and detract from the theatrical experience that the studio is relying on. With a runtime of 165 minutes and a December release, the film is designed for the grandest viewing experience possible.

For now, the wisest course of action is to approach the leak claims with skepticism and await an official response from Disney. The rumor may dissipate, or it could turn out to be the most significant Marvel leak in years. Regardless, the countdown to December 18 has just become much more intense.
