‘Lanterns’ Introduces Carol Ferris to the DCU as Star Sapphire Fans Take Notice
The DCU is actively expanding its roster of cosmic characters, and ‘Lanterns’ has emerged as a platform where intricate comic book lore is subtly acknowledged on screen. Fans had speculated whether the HBO series would overlook significant figures from Green Lantern’s history, but the introduction of Carol Ferris in the DCU addresses part of that uncertainty.
This moment occurs during the episode titled “Bad Optics,” which jumps forward a decade and revisits the murder of Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler). The narrative centers around themes of loss, making Carol’s appearance at Hal’s funeral a poignant choice that resonates with those familiar with the comics.
Carol Ferris, portrayed by Amie Mackenzie, made her DCU debut in ‘Lanterns’. A social media post featuring a still from the episode alongside comic art of Star Sapphire garnered over 323,000 views. Notably, ComicBook.com pointed out that her casting had not been previously confirmed or hinted at, making her appearance a delightful surprise for fans.
She arrives at Hal’s sparsely attended funeral, where the number of mourners is minimal. Carol mentions that Sheriff Kerry Kane invited her and reflects on her history with Hal. John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) immediately recognizes her, indicating that their relationship was well-known.
Carol introduces herself and requests John to read Hal’s self-written eulogy. She also makes a pointed comment about Hal’s only lasting friendship being “the one on his finger,” a clear nod to his ring. She suggests to John that Hal likely appreciated him without ever expressing it, hinting at a deeper understanding of Hal than most.

Created by John Broome and Gil Kane, Carol first appeared in Showcase #22 in 1959. She is the daughter of aerospace tycoon Carl Ferris and serves as an executive at Ferris Aircraft, where she employed Hal as a test pilot. Their romantic connection has been a longstanding element of the storyline.
Her character evolved when she became the villainous Star Sapphire, one of Green Lantern’s most infamous adversaries. As noted by Nerdist, she has transitioned into a heroic role in contemporary comics and is even a member of the Justice League. Additionally, she leads the Star Sapphire Corps, also known as the Violet Lantern Corps, whose rings are fueled by love.
In live-action adaptations, Carol was previously portrayed by Blake Lively in the 2011 ‘Green Lantern’ film, according to Nerdist. Mackenzie is now stepping into a role that has seen various interpretations over the years.

Mackenzie has an interesting career trajectory. The Denver-based actress was a staple in Colorado theater for decades before transitioning to screen acting. After overcoming cancer, she landed her first on-screen role in ‘Better Call Saul’ at the age of 53 and has since appeared in ‘The Madison’ and ‘Mountainhead’.
Her credits include ‘Dexter: Original Sin’, ‘1923’, and ‘MacGruber’, showcasing a portfolio filled with memorable supporting roles, which is fitting for a character who leaves a significant impact in a limited amount of screen time.
While the series has yet to confirm Carol’s identity as Star Sapphire, it does establish her existence, her relationship with Hal, and her motivation for attending his funeral.
There is a rich history to explore. In one notable comic arc, Star Sapphire was responsible for the death of Katma Tui, John’s wife, leading to John’s resentment towards Hal. Although it’s uncertain if ‘Lanterns’ will adapt this storyline, it highlights the complex dynamics that could arise between Carol and John.
It’s surprising how brief her role is, and the episode does not clarify whether Carol will return. Her backstory could be further developed in future seasons, potentially even as Star Sapphire. For now, she serves as a compelling element of Hal’s history and a reminder that the DCU’s portrayal of Hal is more human than his reputation suggests.
‘Lanterns’ is set to return on Sunday, September 27 at 9 p.m. ET on HBO and HBO Max, promising more revelations about Hal’s hologram and a trove of secrets.
