‘Lanterns’ Episode 7 Preview Sparks Bold Comparisons to HBO’s ‘Game of Thrones’
HBO’s ‘Lanterns‘ has been steadily gaining traction, emerging as one of the streaming platform’s standout successes this year. What began as a mystery series intertwined with a superhero narrative has evolved into must-see television, showcasing remarkable week-to-week audience growth that is rare in today’s landscape.
The series follows Hal Jordan and John Stewart as they delve into a murder case in the small town of Rushville, Nebraska. This investigation unfolds across two timelines, gradually unveiling connections to a broader cosmic conspiracy. Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre star as the two Green Lanterns, with Nathan Fillion recently joining the cast as the confident Guy Gardner.
This week, the show’s momentum reached new heights. A preview clip for episode 7, released by HBO Max, garnered nearly 700,000 views within its first nine hours and surpassed 900,000 views in just 12 hours.

Such engagement for a mid-season episode preview is impressive, especially for a series that had to overcome early skepticism due to DC’s inconsistent history on television. Instead of losing viewers, the show has consistently expanded its audience with each new episode.
The statistics support this trend. ‘Lanterns’ debuted with over 20 million global viewers, and episode 3, titled “OutKast,” attracted 10 million global viewers and 7 million domestic viewers within its first three days, marking a series high at that time. This trajectory has reportedly made it HBO’s third-most successful new series launch, following ‘House of the Dragon’ and ‘The Last of Us.’
A significant factor in the rising interest is the current state of the storyline. Episode 6, “Bad Optics,” delivered one of the season’s most impactful twists, revealing that Hal Jordan was murdered upon his return to Rushville. John Stewart was briefly considered a suspect after a physical confrontation, while Guy Gardner’s entrance added complexity, confirming that the villain Sinestro has escaped his cosmic prison just as the murder investigation heats up.

The episode concluded with a pivotal twist, as John retrieved Hal’s ring, unknowingly activating a holographic recording of his late partner, dubbed the “Halogram” by fans. This device offers a direct connection to Hal’s private memories, setting the stage for the high-stakes revelations hinted at in episode 7’s teaser, which states, “Seeking the truth at all costs.” This suggests that John is about to uncover Hal’s secrets more deeply than anyone anticipated.

Critics have largely supported the show’s increasing popularity, with ‘Lanterns’ holding a 93 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes from over 130 reviews. Much of the acclaim has focused on the dynamic between Chandler and Pierre’s characters, as well as the show’s ability to let its murder mystery unfold without rushing into superhero action.
With just two episodes remaining before the season 1 finale on October 4, ‘Lanterns’ shows no signs of slowing down. If the early numbers for episode 7 are any indication, the show is poised to finish its first season as one of HBO’s biggest breakout hits in years.
