‘Street Fighter’ has crafted its marketing strategy to reassure fans that this adaptation truly grasps the essence of what made the games beloved. With trailers showcasing iconic special moves and a steady stream of character posters, Legendary and Paramount are banking on authenticity as their primary selling point ahead of the film’s release on October 16.

Chun-Li, portrayed by Callina Liang, has become a focal point in this narrative. As one of the franchise’s most recognizable characters, her live-action portrayal carries significant expectations, and Liang has openly discussed the extensive preparation she undertook for the role.

A recently shared set photo from Liang provides a fresh look at her preparation. The image captures Liang as Chun-Li, her blue qipao-style dress visibly torn and dirty, with her arms marked by what appears to be blood and grime, presenting a candid moment rather than a polished promotional image.

This battle-worn appearance aligns with the physically demanding training Liang underwent for the character. In an interview with Empire, she revealed that she trained for about two hours daily in Taekwondo, Muay Thai, and Wushu to master Chun-Li’s kick-centric fighting style, while also revamping her diet to build muscle for the role.

Her rigorous regimen reportedly included consuming a dozen eggs daily and eating every two hours during her bulking phase, a routine she described as pushing her to her limits physically. By the end of filming, she noted that her training had added approximately six-and-a-half centimeters to each of her thighs, a transformation aimed at ensuring Chun-Li’s signature kicks appear as powerful on screen as they do in the games.

Liang has also delved deeply into the source material, downloading every version of ‘Street Fighter’ she could find and recording slow-motion footage of Chun-Li’s moves to analyze the character’s technique frame by frame. This dedication to preparation has been echoed by her co-stars Andrew Koji and Noah Centineo, who also completed weeks of intensive training prior to production.

The film centers on Ryu and Ken Masters, who are brought back together by Chun-Li to participate in the World Warrior Tournament, a competition secretly orchestrated by the crime lord M. Bison through his Shadaloo organization. Given Chun-Li’s pivotal role in this narrative, a set photo depicting her in a visibly battered state fits seamlessly into a story built around high-stakes combat and personal stakes linked to Shadaloo’s criminal empire.

Fan reactions to Liang’s casting and appearance have generally been positive throughout the marketing campaign, with earlier first-look images of her in costume receiving praise for capturing the character’s silhouette and essence. This new image, more rugged and authentic than the character posters that preceded it, adds another dimension to that reception, indicating the film’s willingness to portray its heroine as genuinely battered rather than camera-ready at all times.

As the release date approaches, glimpses like this are sure to heighten anticipation. If Liang’s training and this latest image are any indication, ‘Street Fighter’ appears committed to making its fight scenes feel impactful and earned.
