‘Days of Thunder’ Star Tom Cruise Discusses The Future of Movie Theaters Amid AI
Tom Cruise has established himself as one of Hollywood’s most passionate advocates for the traditional theatrical experience. Over the years, he has risked his safety in daring stunts to remind audiences of the significance of the big screen, especially as streaming services and artificial intelligence reshape entertainment consumption.
This ongoing dialogue took center stage during a recent career-spanning event in London, where Cruise reflected on his decades in filmmaking while contemplating the industry’s future. The setting allowed him to address some of the most pressing questions facing Hollywood today.
At BAFTA’s “Life in Pictures” conversation, Cruise spoke about the increasing influence of artificial intelligence in filmmaking. He acknowledged that while AI is here to stay, he passionately defended the unique experience that theaters provide. “Here’s the thing: There is nothing like human,” he stated, emphasizing his commitment to preserving the theatrical experience.
Cruise clarified that his position does not stem from any opposition to streaming platforms. “I have nothing against streaming or anything like that,” he remarked, framing the theatrical experience as fundamentally different from home viewing, describing it as simply “a different art form” in comments reported by Variety.
To support his argument, Cruise pointed to the record-breaking box office performance from this past summer, which grossed $4,760,000,000 between May 1 and Labor Day. For him, these figures clearly indicate that audiences still yearn for the communal experience that theaters offer, even as streaming becomes the norm.
“People want that experience. They’re going to movie theaters,” Cruise said, adding a broader perspective on audiences and storytelling: “I always believe in humanity.” This sentiment has been a recurring theme in Cruise’s public remarks, linking his filmmaking philosophy to his belief in shared, in-person experiences.
In addition to discussing the theatrical experience, Cruise addressed the larger conversation around artificial intelligence during the same discussion. Instead of outright rejecting the technology, he acknowledged its inevitability while encouraging filmmakers to focus on authentic storytelling.
“You know, it is coming and it’s going to happen,” Cruise said regarding AI, asserting that audiences will continue to prefer genuine human craftsmanship over anything artificially created. His message to fellow creatives was straightforward: keep creating, regardless of how technology evolves.
While reflecting on his four-decade career, which includes franchises like ‘Top Gun’ and ‘Mission: Impossible’ as well as acclaimed dramas like ‘Jerry Maguire’ and ‘Magnolia,’ Cruise also teased his upcoming project. He is set to star in ‘Digger,’ directed by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Alejandro G. Iñárritu, marking his first collaboration with the director known for ‘Birdman’ and ‘The Revenant.’
In ‘Digger,’ Cruise portrays Digger Rockwell, a wealthy oil tycoon whose company’s actions lead to a catastrophic ecological disaster with the potential to ignite a nuclear conflict. This project offers Cruise yet another chance to engage in the large-scale, ambitious filmmaking he believes is essential for keeping theaters relevant.
Cruise’s remarks come at a time when the industry is grappling with the implications of AI in filmmaking and the future of theatrical releases. Given his history of prioritizing real stunts and genuine spectacle in his films, his stance feels like a natural extension of his career-long advocacy.
Whether the rest of the industry shares his optimism about the longevity of theaters remains to be seen, but Cruise’s ongoing support carries significant weight, especially considering his impressive box office success.
