Tom Cruise has spent decades establishing himself as one of Hollywood’s most bankable stars, but his latest project represents a significant shift from the high-octane spectacles audiences have come to expect. Collaborating with a renowned filmmaker known for a different storytelling style has already made this partnership one of the year’s most anticipated.

That excitement reached new heights this week as the film was finally unveiled to audiences. After months of buildup and a notably cautious approach to the festival circuit, the premiere became an event in its own right.

Emma D’Arcy was part of the ensemble cast photographed at the world premiere of ‘Digger’ in London, joining Cruise and the film’s star-studded lineup as Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s satire officially debuted on September 22. The screening took place as a Royal Film Performance in Leicester Square, organized by Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures to support the Film and TV Charity.

‘Digger’ marks Iñárritu’s first English-language film since his Oscar-winning 2015 feature ‘The Revenant,’ showcasing Cruise in a role unlike any he has taken on in recent memory. In the film, Cruise portrays Digger Rockwell, described in the official logline as “the most powerful man in the world,” who embarks on a frantic mission to establish himself as humanity’s savior before the very disaster he unleashed obliterates everything.

The film has been characterized as “a comedy of catastrophic proportions,” blending sharp satire with the ensemble dramatic weight that Iñárritu is known for. Reports indicate that Cruise undergoes a significant transformation for the role, adopting a thick Southern accent and noticeably altered physical features.

D’Arcy joins a cast that features Riz Ahmed, John Goodman, Sandra Hüller, Michael Stuhlbarg, Jesse Plemons, and Sophie Wilde, providing the film with a level of dramatic intensity unusual for a project primarily marketed as a comedy. This combination of comedic premise and heavyweight ensemble casting has generated significant buzz since the film’s announcement.

Iñárritu directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Alexander Dinelaris, Nicolás Giacobone, and Sabina Berman, reuniting with Oscar-winning cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki, who shot the film on 35mm using VistaVision. Filming occurred in and around the UK’s Pinewood Studios over approximately six months, giving the London premiere added significance as a sort of homecoming for the production.

At CinemaCon earlier this year, Iñárritu discussed how long this collaboration has been in the making. “I started having the idea for this film nine years ago, and two years after that Tom and I began discussing the possibility of him becoming Digger Rockwell,” Iñárritu said, according to Gold Derby. “We know he is fearless, but embodying this character is another kind of fearless.”

This description encapsulates much of what has made the pairing so fascinating to industry observers, considering how far outside his typical roles this character seems to push Cruise. With Iñárritu’s history of transforming spectacle into pointed commentary, expectations for how their creative visions would align have only intensified since the project was first announced.

Following its London premiere, ‘Digger’ is scheduled for international release starting September 30, before hitting North American theaters and IMAX screens on October 2. This film marks Cruise’s first project since signing a deal to develop and produce theatrical films with Warner Bros. Discovery, adding another layer of importance to how the film performs upon its wide release.

Given the strength of its ensemble cast and Iñárritu’s reputation for awards-caliber filmmaking, ‘Digger’ appears poised to be one of the most closely monitored releases of the fall season.
