Nearly 17 years after his passing, Michael Jackson continues to be a prominent figure in music, and 2026 has showcased this in an extraordinary way. What started as a slight increase in streaming interest earlier this year has rapidly evolved into a significant cultural phenomenon, with the King of Pop’s name appearing across charts, headlines, and search results in ways that few anticipated just a year ago.

Numerous reports throughout the year have highlighted the magnitude of this renewed interest, consistently showing Jackson as the most searched artist on Google in 2026 thus far. This assertion has been echoed by various music-focused accounts and outlets, placing Jackson at or near the top of the search rankings, even as other major artists have fluctuated in and out of the cultural spotlight.

The clear catalyst for this search dominance is the highly anticipated biopic ‘Michael,’ which premiered in theaters in April and has continued to perform exceptionally well in the months that followed. Directed by Antoine Fuqua and written by John Logan, the film chronicles Jackson’s journey from his childhood with the Jackson 5 to his ascent as one of the most commercially successful solo artists in music history, concluding during his 1988 ‘Bad’ World Tour.

The film’s success has been remarkable by any standard. ‘Michael’ debuted with $217.4 million globally, marking the biggest opening weekend ever for a biopic, and it eventually surpassed ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ to become the highest-grossing music biopic of all time. By July, the film had crossed the $1 billion mark at the worldwide box office, making it the first biographical film in history to achieve this milestone and the first-ever Lionsgate release to do so.

Director Antoine Fuqua reflected on this achievement, describing it as “a deeply humbling moment that celebrates the tireless dedication of our incredible producers, cast, crew, and partners,” in comments shared with Variety. This milestone places ‘Michael’ alongside only a select few films that have crossed the billion-dollar threshold in 2026, joining ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’ as one of just two releases to reach that point in the year.

Much of the film’s success can be attributed to its lead performance. Jaafar Jackson, the real-life nephew of Michael Jackson and son of Jermaine Jackson, stars in the title role, marking his feature-film acting debut. He is supported by a cast that includes Colman Domingo and Nia Long as his parents, Joe and Katherine Jackson. This milestone makes him the first lead actor in history to debut in a role that anchored a billion-dollar box office release.

The box office triumph has directly contributed to the renewed search and streaming interest that has propelled Jackson’s dominance this year. Billboard reported that in May, Jackson achieved four entries in the top 50 of the Hot 100 in a single week, led by “Billie Jean” at number 17, while also placing two projects in the top 10 of the Billboard 200, with ‘Thriller’ at number 5 and his hits compilation ‘Number Ones’ at number 6. Billboard attributed this surge directly to the wave of renewed streaming activity following the film’s release.

With ‘Michael’ concluding its narrative during Jackson’s 1988 tour, there are already indications that Lionsgate is considering greenlighting at least one additional film to further explore later chapters of his life and career. Given how significantly this first installment reshaped both box office records and online search behavior, a continuation seems like a logical next step for a studio eager to maintain the momentum.

Whatever the future holds, 2026 has firmly reestablished Michael Jackson as one of the most searched, streamed, and discussed artists globally, nearly two decades after his death.
