Disney+ Price Hike Subscribers Face New $21.49 Monthly Rate
Streaming subscriptions have rapidly become one of the fastest-growing monthly expenses for many households, and Disney’s flagship service has been at the forefront of this trend since its launch. Initially one of the more affordable options in the streaming landscape, Disney+ has steadily closed the price gap with its major competitors over the years.
This week, Disney implemented another price increase, raising the ad-free version of Disney+ to $21.49 per month. This 13% hike, as reported by Bloomberg, aligns the service more closely with the premium ad-free pricing of competitors like Netflix. Subscribers began noticing these changes as early as Wednesday.
The new pricing structure affects various tiers across both Disney+ and Hulu. The ad-free “Premium” plans for both services now cost $21.49 per month, up about $2.50 from the previous $18.99. Additionally, the combined Disney+/Hulu Premium bundle has increased by $2 to $21.99, only fifty cents more than subscribing to each service separately. Ad-supported plans also saw increases, albeit smaller than those for ad-free options.
This marks the sixth price increase for Disney+ since its original debut in 2019, when the ad-free service launched at a modest $6.99 per month, marketed as a budget-friendly alternative to pricier rivals. Since then, the service has gradually increased its price, moving from $10.99 in 2022, to $13.99 in 2023, to $15.99 in 2024, and most recently to $18.99 last year, before reaching the current $21.49.
Overall, this trajectory means Disney+ now costs more than triple its launch price just seven years ago, a significant shift for a service originally promoted as an affordable, family-friendly entry into streaming. The Bloomberg report highlights that this latest increase brings Disney+ closer to Netflix’s premium ad-free tier, which charges $26.99 per month for 4K resolution and access across multiple devices, indicating that Disney still sees potential for price increases without matching its biggest competitor dollar for dollar.
This price hike is part of a broader trend. Just weeks ago, Disney raised the price of its legacy Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN Select bundle to $27.99 for existing subscribers who maintained that older plan configuration. This adjustment is part of a larger strategy as the company integrates Hulu content directly into the Disney+ app experience.
This ongoing price increase reflects a strategy Disney has embraced for years, banking on its vast content library, which includes Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar, and its extensive back catalog, to justify continued price hikes without significant subscriber losses. Disney executives have previously noted that past price increases have led to minimal cancellations, which they cite as evidence for continuing this trend.
As streaming subscription costs across the industry continue to rise, Disney+ subscribers now face a familiar decision: absorb the higher cost, switch to an ad-supported tier, or reconsider how many services their household budget can realistically accommodate.
