Johnny Depp’s journey back to major studio filmmaking has been under close scrutiny since his highly publicized legal battles altered his standing in Hollywood. Each new project he takes on is evaluated against this backdrop, and few upcoming films carry as much significance as his latest collaboration with a director renowned for reviving stalled careers and an Oscar-nominated co-star with whom he has a genuine on-screen connection.

This project is ‘Day Drinker,’ and its first teaser trailer has just been unveiled, providing fans with their first glimpse of the Lionsgate thriller ahead of a full trailer expected tomorrow. Directed by Marc Webb and penned by Zach Dean, the film follows a private-yacht bartender who encounters a mysterious guest onboard, leading them both into unexpected entanglements with a criminal figure.

Depp stars alongside Madelyn Cline and Penélope Cruz in leading roles, marking the fourth collaboration between Depp and Cruz after their previous work on ‘Blow,’ ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,’ and ‘Murder on the Orient Express.’ Cline, recognized for her breakout role on Netflix’s ‘Outer Banks,’ portrays the yacht bartender at the heart of the narrative, while Cruz plays the criminal figure who disrupts their lives.

Webb, known for ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ and ‘500 Days of Summer,’ takes on ‘Day Drinker’ after his notable misstep directing Disney’s live-action ‘Snow White.’ When production began, Webb expressed genuine excitement for the project, stating, “I’m thrilled to be starting production with Johnny, Madelyn, Penelope, and this incredible cast. We’re in a beautiful location with a fantastic crew and a thrilling, ferocious story to tell. This is gonna be fun,” as shared in comments to Variety.

The film boasts a strong production team behind the scenes as well. It’s produced by Thunder Road’s Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee, the duo behind the ‘John Wick’ franchise, alongside Adam Kolbrenner, known for producing ‘Free Guy’ and ‘The Tomorrow War,’ and screenwriter Zach Dean. Principal photography took place in Spain, with a supporting cast that includes Manu Ríos, Arón Piper, Juan Diego Botto, and Anika Boyle rounding out the ensemble.

For Depp, ‘Day Drinker’ signifies his most prominent mainstream studio project since the public controversies surrounding his divorce and subsequent legal battles with Amber Heard, which resulted in Disney and Warner Bros. cutting ties with him on the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ and ‘Fantastic Beasts’ franchises. Whether audiences will perceive the film as a true comeback or merely another chapter in an ongoing narrative remains to be seen, but the talent surrounding him, both in front of and behind the camera, indicates that Lionsgate is placing significant bets on his box office appeal.

The production also reunites Depp with cinematographer Javier Aguirresarobe and costume designer Penny Rose, both of whom bring extensive experience from past collaborations, enhancing the project’s visual quality to match its impressive cast.

‘Day Drinker’ is currently set to hit theaters in the United States on March 26, 2027, giving fans a considerable wait before the film’s full narrative unfolds on screen. With a proper trailer expected to drop soon, audiences will soon gain a clearer understanding of the tone Webb and his cast are aiming for, whether it leans into tense criminal thriller territory or incorporates elements of dark humor. With its star-studded cast, the John Wick production pedigree, and Depp’s ongoing career recalibration, ‘Day Drinker’ is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated releases as we head into 2027.
