Daisy Edgar-Jones Shines in ‘Sense and Sensibility’ Ahead of UK Release Date
Fans of period dramas have eagerly awaited the return of Jane Austen’s cherished sisters to the big screen in a proper theatrical adaptation, and that wait is nearly over. With the film’s UK release just days away, the cast has ramped up promotional efforts, offering fans a fresh glimpse of the story before it hits theaters.
Daisy Edgar-Jones was recently seen at a press event promoting the film, continuing a promotional rollout that has steadily heightened anticipation since the debut of the first trailer earlier this year. The actress takes center stage as Elinor Dashwood, the responsible eldest sister at the heart of Austen’s narrative, marking the first major theatrical adaptation of the novel since Ang Lee’s acclaimed 1995 version featuring Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet.

Directed by Georgia Oakley and penned by novelist and screenwriter Diana Reid, ‘Sense and Sensibility’ follows the Dashwood family as they navigate love, class, and security in Georgian-era England after the sudden death of their father plunges them into financial difficulties. The film is set to premiere in the United Kingdom on September 25, just two days away, before making its way to U.S. theaters on October 16.
Joining Edgar-Jones is Esmé Creed-Miles as Marianne Dashwood, Elinor’s passionate and outspoken younger sister. The two actresses bring a genuine history to their on-screen sibling dynamic, having previously collaborated as teenagers in the 2018 film ‘Pond Life.’ Caitríona Balfe completes the Dashwood family as Mrs. Dashwood, while George MacKay takes on the role of Edward Ferrars, marking a significant shift from the supporting war-drama roles that first garnered him recognition.
The supporting cast features Frank Dillane as John Willoughby, Herbert Nordrum as Colonel Brandon, Fiona Shaw as Mrs. Jennings, and Bodhi Rae Breathnach as the youngest Dashwood sister, Margaret. Behind the scenes, the film is produced by Working Title Films, known for several acclaimed Austen adaptations over the past two decades, including the 2005 hit ‘Pride and Prejudice,’ produced again by Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner alongside November Pictures’ India Flint and Jo Wallett.

Edgar-Jones’s role as Elinor comes at a pivotal moment in her career, following the box office success of 2024’s ‘Twisters,’ which grossed over $370 million worldwide, and her earlier acclaim for her breakout performance in ‘Normal People.’ This combination of critical acclaim and commercial appeal has positioned her as one of the most anticipated leads in this fall’s competitive prestige release calendar, with early reviews already surfacing ahead of the film’s wide release.
A recent review from Deadline characterized the film as a rebellious interpretation of Austen’s classic satire, indicating that Oakley and Reid aimed for a more naturalistic and emotionally resonant approach than previous adaptations, rather than a strictly faithful retelling. This approach seems intentional, with the filmmaking team promising a deeper focus on the evolving relationship between Elinor and Marianne as the emotional core of the narrative.

The film’s release strategy has already undergone a change, with its original U.S. release date of September 11 pushed back to October 16, allowing the adaptation to build momentum following its UK debut. Currently, Focus Features has not announced any digital rental or streaming premiere date, treating the film as an exclusive theatrical release for now, a strategy that indicates strong confidence in its box office potential.
With its UK premiere just around the corner and a star-studded American release still weeks away, ‘Sense and Sensibility’ is poised to be one of the standout period drama releases of the fall movie season. With Edgar-Jones’s rising star power and a supporting cast primed for awards-season recognition, all indications suggest this adaptation will carve out its own niche alongside the story’s most cherished previous versions.
