When ‘White Chicks’ premiered in 2004, critics were harsh, but audiences had a different reaction. The Wayans brothers’ comedy, featuring two FBI agents disguising themselves as heiresses, became a cult classic, earning $113.1 million worldwide against a $37 million budget. Nearly two decades later, fans continue to quote the film and eagerly inquire about a potential ‘White Chicks’ sequel.

Terry Crews understands this demand better than anyone. His character, Latrell Spencer, became iconic, especially with his memorable rendition of ‘A Thousand Miles.’ Crews has been one of the most vocal advocates for a sequel.

However, his enthusiasm has sometimes outpaced reality. In 2019, during an appearance on ‘Watch What Happens Live,’ Crews mentioned that Shawn Wayans had indicated a sequel was in the works, only for Marlon Wayans to clarify shortly after that no deal was in place. Recently, Crews shared on The Jennifer Hudson Show that he is prepared for the Wayans to reach out.

Crews believes the timing is right. The Wayans brothers had linked the fate of ‘White Chicks 2’ to the success of ‘Scary Movie,’ and he argues that the film performed well enough to pave the way for a sequel.

The numbers support his claim. ‘Scary Movie’ debuted on June 5, raking in a franchise-best $55 million domestically on a $30 million budget. It has since grossed $231.9 million worldwide, a solid performance for a film that received mixed reviews, holding a 24% critic score and a 66% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes as of mid-June.

The Wayans brothers have been transparent about their intentions. In February, Marlon mentioned on the ‘Rap Attack’ podcast that a successful run for ‘Scary Movie’ would lead them back to ‘White Chicks 2.’ In April, both Marlon and Shawn told Entertainment Tonight that a sequel could materialize if the new movie performed well.

This new installment also marked a reunion for the brothers. It was the first time Marlon, Shawn, and Keenen Ivory Wayans collaborated on the franchise in 18 years, bringing back Anna Faris and Regina Hall. Directed by Michael Tiddes, Paramount handled the release.

Despite the optimism, no formal announcement has been made yet. Marlon told Variety in June that discussions about the sequel are ongoing, even suggesting some outlandish ideas, including a potential Mar-a-Lago setting and a holiday-themed version. The Wayans camp has yet to officially greenlight the project.

This leaves a gap between Crews’s optimism and the current status. It’s a familiar situation for the actor, who has navigated similar waters before. Nevertheless, the brothers have remained enthusiastic since the release of ‘Scary Movie,’ and the box office success strengthens their case.

Cultural considerations also loom over any potential sequel. Some critics argue that producing a whiteface comedy in today’s climate would be challenging, while others suggest the Wayans may be too old to reprise the roles of young socialites. These discussions are likely to accompany any future announcements.

Crews, however, appears unfazed. He has consistently joked about maintaining his fitness in anticipation of the sequel, and his latest public appearance shows that his patience remains intact.
