‘Avengers: Endgame Encore’ Presales Boost Box Office Predictions for Opening Weekend
Typically, re-releases experience a brief nostalgia boost before quickly fading, but ‘Avengers: Endgame Encore’ has been performing like a brand-new blockbuster for weeks. The presales for Marvel’s return to its 2019 hit have been robust enough to prompt analysts to reconsider the potential of catalogue titles.
Tickets became available in August, and reports indicate that the film has broken the record for the highest first-day presales for any theatrical re-release, surpassing the previous record held by ‘Titanic’s’ 2012 3D re-release for fourteen years. Additionally, Marvel’s trailer garnered 77 million views within its first 24 hours, according to Deadline.
As opening day arrives, tracker TheFlatLannister has shared a new update on the Box Office Theory forums, which quickly spread through r/boxoffice. The tracker continues to anticipate a weekend gross exceeding $25 million, showing no change from the previous day. It also notes that the MTC3 comp is performing very well, outpacing the MTC2 comp in both ticket sales and revenue.
Another positive sign is that Sunday sales at MTC3 are already surpassing Thursday’s raw ticket sales, indicating a healthy trend for the entire weekend rather than just a surge of initial fan demand.
The broader tracking data aligns with this optimism. Variety predicts the film will earn between $25 million and $28 million over the weekend, while Murphy’s Multiverse estimates a range of $22 million to $27 million domestically. TheWrap has reported that independent trackers and exhibition sources expect at least $25 million, with a strong possibility of exceeding $30 million.
Box Office Theory takes a more cautious stance in its forecast, projecting a range of $18 million to $27 million and labeling the release as a fan-driven event. This makes the forum tracker’s $25 million-plus estimate appear to be on the optimistic side.
The significance of the $25 million mark is tied to a record. A result near the top of the tracking would surpass the 2012 ‘Titanic 3D’ re-release, which earned $25.6 million, marking the highest domestic opening weekend for a theatrical re-release.

International presales are also contributing positively. In China, presales for the September 24-27 window reached $965,000 after just two days of sales, outpacing the two-day totals of ‘The Batman’ at $313,000 and ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’ at $435,000. Some trackers are now suggesting a global opening could exceed $50 million.
India appears to be performing well too. Pinkvilla reported approximately 35,000 tickets sold for opening day in major chains PVR Inox and Cinepolis, although it noted that these figures are subjective trade estimates. In Indonesia, where the film opened early on September 23, Cinepoint reported 131,692 admissions across 2,108 showtimes on day one, reclaiming the overall admissions record for ‘Avengers: Endgame’ from the local hit ‘Agak Laen: Menyala Pantiku!’.

The overarching question remains whether this rerun can reclaim the all-time box office crown. ‘Avengers: Endgame’ currently stands at $2,799.4 million worldwide, while ‘Avatar’ leads at $2,923.7 million, leaving a gap of $124.3 million. Even a strong domestic performance of $25 million to $28 million would still leave it approximately $96 million to $99 million short, meaning international audiences will need to shoulder much of the burden.
Marvel has a lot at stake with this release. ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has surpassed ‘Endgame’ on the all-time domestic chart, earning $858.4 million to take the No. 2 position. The re-release also offers an exclusive preview of ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, which is set to hit theaters on December 18, and ‘Doomsday’ has already accumulated over $50 million in presales.
However, not everything is guaranteed. Enthusiasm for presales does not always translate into final grosses once the opening weekend arrives, and Zach Cregger’s ‘Resident Evil’ is targeting $24 million to $26 million in its second weekend following a $60.2 million debut.
